Well, did a little tinkering today. I've been wanting to make my own modified cases for use in the Hornady Lock-N-Load OAL Gauge for a while. Not sure if any of you use this nifty device but I love it.

1) Saves Money...Cabellas and Midway and several others currently sell them for around $5+ each.

2) I have several calibers that Hornady does not make a modified case for. I know they have a custom service but wanted to try to make homemade before I spit out those kind of bucks for a custom modified case.
Materials:
1) An empty cartridge (in this case a 8mm Mauser that happened to be Berden primed)
2) 1/4 Drill bit
3) 5/16-32 tap. I bought one off Ebay for $5.95 from this guy http://myworld.ebay.com/roginsf/ . Fast delivery and very reasonable compared to any place else I found on line.
4) Drill Press. I guess you could use a hand drill if you could get steady enough.
5) Safety Glasses...spits out quite a bit of brass when drilling and tapping.
6) Pliers..gotta find something better!
Was a pretty simple operation...Here are the steps I took:
1) Centered case under drill bit (I need to find a little better solution to stabilize the case)...Ideas?
2) Use the 1/4 in. drill bit to make a starter hole
3) Swap out for the 5/16-32 tap and gently tap the case through
4) TaDa! You now have a modified case.
Couple of notes on room for improvement (looking for some suggestions):
1) What is best way to stabilize the case so you don't mar it up when drilling or tapping?
2) I'm obviously not a machinist. What is best way to brace and get the case precisely center?
Anyway, some pictures follow. Will send updates as I continue to tinker and improve my process.
The pics:
1) The 5/16-32 tap
2) 8MM Mauser Berdan primed case
3) My drill press
4) After drill starter hole with 1/4 in drill bit
5 & 6) The tapping process
7 & 8) Perfect fit on the Hornady Lock-N-Load OAL Gauge
9) Comparison. The modified case on the left is a Hornady commercial 30.06 that I bought from MidwayUSA for $4.99, the modified case on the right is the one I made
10) Damn I really need to get a bigger reload bench!
Any comments or suggestions greatly appreciated.
