I have read articles saying you should NEVER fire 5.56 in a rifle chambered for Remington .223. Anyone care to discuss this or offer insight? The rifle in question is a new Ruger Ranch Mini-14.

Don't. 5.56 is hotter. Shoot .223. I highly doubt it'll catastrophically fail, but it's like shooting +p in something not rated for it.

Also, some .223 rifles can handle the 5.56. I believe the Rem.700 Tactical may be one. Also check the .223 Wylde. Always check mfrs. recommendations before proceeding.

I wouldn't shoot 5.56mm in a .223 rifle unless it specified it had a Wylde chamber.

The Ruger website says you can shoot .223/5.56 in the 2005 and up mini 14's, except the Target models which are .223 only. Go to the Ruger website and look up the manual for your rifle. There are different ones broken down by year groups.

The OP did say "Ranch" Mini 14, if he said or meant "Target" 5.56 would not be OK.

Have a .223 Colt SP1, that eats anything.
Its not about feeding, its about whether the cartridge will damage the gun (and you).

If it's rated for both, what's the question? If it's rated for .223, the answer is no.
Ie: Pooping out is what counts.

.223 in 5.56 OK
5.56 in .223 NO
Unless, like the Ruger Owners Manual states 5.56 is ok. I am guessing it actually has a 5.56 chamber.

The ranch rifles can shoot either 556 or 223. Only the target model is 223

The Mini-14 580 series and above ranch models are .223 Wylde chamber so it is no problem.

I have a remington 700 sps tatical and have often wondered if it would handle a 5.56 at the added pressure. But I like my face, eyes, and rifle too much to find out.
