So basically there's nothing that can be done to stop them from coming up to my door. The only thing I can do is discourage them from coming back.

Is there a law that says you can't turn on your sprinklers at certain unannounced but convenient times of the day?

Answer the door wearing only a shoulder holster with a 1911 in it (condition 1 a bonus). May take a while for word to get through the "grapevine" to the rest of the crowd but the frequency of door knocks should eventually start to decrease.

    The answer is very simple.

Don't answer the door if you don't know who it is.

They will go away soon enough.

The Capitol Meat folks take a bit longer for the hint to sink in.

    Simple answer pretty much this.

I'd need a horse stable if I were to get a bigger dog

Arrest them for what? Is soliciting against the law?

But if you want to get more creative, this.

    tresspassing.

This is the technical and proper answer. In Maryland (maybe it was Georgia?) as I understand it; if you have a legitimate 'No trespassing' sign, that is legally their first warning, and if you do call the police and they arrive before the perps leave (anyone you politely ask to leave and they don't, is a perp) - the police 'can' arrest them for trespassing. However ypu will have to convince the officer(s) that this is a major ongoing problem and you desperately need them to do something about it. Because it will likely get thrown out and cause the police a lot of down time administratively dealing with your issue.

    I vote for citizens arrest.

    Yeah, don't do this.

Just tell them you are glad the escort service finally sent another one because you ended up breaking the first one....

Is this from the tv show Breaking Bad? I gotta watch that show someday. :)

i have a 110lb lab, kinda hard to hold him back with 1 arm, while opening the door with the other

the few people we get people dont stay long

    Yep, this works.

check your local ordinances, a lot require solicitor permits. Up here where they are required, it's kinda easy. They knock, take a picture through the window, ask for their permit, if they don't have one (vast majority of the time) tell them you are calling the police. If they do have a permit, tell them to get off your property. Won't open the door for them, and figure if they are casing the place, some paranoid dude with their picture is probably the last thing they want.

Learn a few phrases in Spanish. Most good uns will send a Spanish speaker next time. When they show up speak 'Murican. Rinse and repeat. Even the Jehovahs leave me alone.

Or alternatively, swing the door open and step towards them screaming "I ordered the pizza three days ago and you're just now getting here? Then either A: pay them for the nonexistent pizza in play money or Monopoly money, or B: slam the door closed continuing your rant on customer service.

Also act deaf and get into a yelling match.

This is much more fun. It also gets them out of the neighborhood.

My favorite are Asphalt Gypsies and their "leftover material from another job"

I have had it all since moving in here 4 years ago.

    Verizon
    Comcast
    Capitol Meats
    Asphalt guys this past summer
    Window sales man
    Roof salesman
    People selling magazines
Girls Scouts selling cookies. One girl didn't even stop talking as I told her that my daughter, who goes to elementary school with her and rides her bus, is also a Girl Scout and we bought cookies from her.

The roofing and window guys are hilarious. I tell them I plan on doing the roof and windows myself, even though they are in the area doing another job and are willing to give me a great price. Then, they try to test my knowledge by asking me what type of windows/shingles I am going to go with. Anderson/Pella and CertainTeed/GAF usually gets the job done and they are on their merry way. One of the roofing specialists wanted to prod some more about how I was going to install the shingles. Felt with a hurricane strip on the bottom, followed by shingles nailed down with a pneumatic roofing gun using coiled nails, was enough to get him to move on.
