I'll be needing to hire a probate attorney in the next few days. If any of the MDS brethren have a recommendation PM me with contact info please, that includes any of our resident legal eagles if that's their specialty.

After dealing with probate for my grandmother, it can be a hassle in MD.
After everything was said and done, I find out I get charged 50 for a five minute phone call.
    WV was supper easy.
    Good luck

I'm not saying don't hire a probate attorney, but my experience wasn't that bad (notwithstanding the fact I had to euthanize my mom).

Contact the clerk of the court, they can likely answer any questions you have.

On the other hand, a good probate attorney will take care of everything for you, though they are (rightfully) costly.

When my father-in-law died in Pennsylvania, my sister-in-law hired a probate attorney. Everything he did looked very routine to me, like filing forms, placing newspaper notices, etc. He charged $5000. Maybe there's more to it than I saw, but it looked like a racket to me.

Not a racket - at least not in Maryland where a probate attorney is not required.

With smaller estates, it certainly can be done without an attorney, and the MoCo probate people were very helpful with me.

If the estate is large or complex, or family member and other leaches start to suck (as they often do), an attorney can be some of the best money ever spent.

I wouldn't think an attorney is required in PA, but I do not know.

    IANAL.
