All this MD SBR talk has my head spinning. If I have a RR M16 am I still allowed to put a short barrel on it?

x2 Yes. But your life will be simpler if it transfers w/ a >16" barrel:)

MGs don't have a barrel length requirement......

Post transfer, they don't. MSP is interpreting the law to say any firearm with a barrel less than 16" is a handgun and thus must follow the handgun transfer rules.

If you already have a MG and want to put a short barrel on it, I don't see anything in the law preventing you from doing so.

As said it currently only applies to the configuration of the weapon when its transferred. If the gun was made AFTER 1985 and has a barrel under 16" then it HAS to be on the MD Roster. Problem is determining when a MG is made, which involves a FOIA request.

Once you OWN the gun you can configure it how you want.

Purchased the gun about 4 years ago. It was made in 1973 IIRC. So I'm good to go with any barrel I want? Thanks.
Actually, just looked at Form 4 and it doesn't list date so How do I find out date of manufacture, write Colt? If not how do I file a FOIA request? It transferred with a 20" barrel.

You can put a short bbl on it. The >16" limit is for a new transfer if you want to avoid the pistol roster mess. Since you already have it, no worries.
