Case lube coming out of solution.

Anyone have an issue with their homebrew case lube coming out of solution?

I'm using 99% iso alcohol, with 100% pure liquid lanolin. I've seen ratios from 10:1 to 1:1 and the most widely held opinion over many forums is 8:1.

I went with conventional wisdom and made 36oz and it works well, except it partially separates after a few hours.

I've never had my Dillon lube separate. Any ideas as to why it's doing this and what Dillon does differently to avoid this issue?

Dillon recommends on their bottles to shake the bottle before using. Might want to do that with your personal stash.

I bought a handful of Dillon Case lube bottles years ago and every time I grab one you need to shake it up to remix it.

I stopped using lanolin and now use cable lubricant which can be found at Home Depot or Lowe's and it is cheaper to boot. I mix it with ISO Heat (99% Alcohol found at Wally World) the same as with lanolin. It doesn' t seem to separate like some stuff does.

I also got a coupon (7.99) for a Harbor Freight heat gun and it makes lubing go much faster. I just dump them in a round tupperware container, spray and swish around, heat with gun until dry and start loading.

Homemade case lube, or Dillon cas lube....... shake the container a few times before use.
Make sure the lanolin is mixed w/ alcohol. :thumbsup:

Yep, anhydrous lanolin and 99% isopropyl. The Dillon lube has never separated on me, even though I do shake it (just because).

Maybe I got a bum batch of lanolin. It was fine when it was warm after mixing it. It's been in the garage where it's cooler since then and I shake it every time I go out there. Whatever, it still works fine, just looks weird.

It resembles a water product when there are too many total dissolved solids and they just fall out of solution. Maybe I'll try bringing it inside to see if it keeps better.

Guess I should have should have tried a little antimony after all. I know there is a thread around here with the correct ratio. :innocent0

You guys may already know this trick, but a stainless nut in your spray bottle helps a lot with the shaking it up.

Just shake it. The alcohol just evaporates off your cases anyway.

BTW, cable lubricant is about 95 percent water. The slick stuff is a polyacrylamide. I doesn't work very well on cables when dry, if at all. I don't see how it does much while resizing

The yellow cable lube that is sold by Home Depot works great with alcohol and I do a lot of resizing with my Dillon.

Did you mix it warmed? Did you use 99% iso alcohol vs. 70% rubbing alcohol?

Oh, that stuff is different. Very waxy. I was thinking of the clear.

Yes and yes. I read a couple dozen threads about it and made sure I got the correct components and mixing suggestions.

It works fine, I just hate shaking the piss out of it to get the small amount of sludge off of the bottom. Maybe I should have started with a smaller batch. This 36oz bottle should last me a good while. :lol2:

OK..............brought it inside and it's fine.

The regular Dillon lube still hasn't separated like that. Oh well, problem solved.
