Found this in my Grandmothers attic. Any ideas on what it goes to?

Thank You very much for your quick response. I also have a complete 1903 but i was told years ago that it was sported out. Is cutting it down sporting it?

If the barrel is chopped or if the receiver is drilled for scope mount yes its been sporterized. Also some feel that early 1903s can be unsafe to shoot as some were improperly heat treated.

A picture of the front sight would be an easy way to figure it out. Also depending on production date even if you have fired it before I would be cautious about firing modern ammo in it. Yes I know its been shot but modern hunting 30-06 ammo is way hotter than the milsurp ammo these were made for. Chances are minimal but I would rather not have pipe bomb go off in my face if something does go wrong.

    Safe shooting!

Hmm. Now I have to tap out as you have lost me. 1903 is an 06 rifle unless someone rebarreled and rechambered it which would be a very odd job as the 06 is a very potent caliber.

Now that im thinking about it. It might be engraved springfield 1898 but when i looked it up i believe it said manufactured in 1903. I definately shoot 30-40 krag ammo and the weapon has definately been sportified. I will post some pics of it tonight because i never really understood what it is. Another question, on my pics in this thread there is a notch on the left side where it looks like the bolt arm would rest. I thought that should be on the right side. Am i wrong?

There were some 30-40s made in 1903.

That isn't for the bolt its for the bolt cut off. It can lock the bolt or allow you to remove it from the rifle.

This is a 1903A3, 03s are very similar with the sights in front of the receiver but the stocks are interchangeable for the most part.

I think you may have a Krag but happened to find an 03 stock in addition to that.
