I'm in Anne Arundel and am looking for a revolver with 4/5 in barrel. Don't have one yet so i obviously "NEED" one. Not looking for the itty bitty hammerless designs. USED is absolutely ok, as long as it is functional and safe. I love the look of the S&W revolvers but don't seem to find any in the price range i can swing right now. Suggestions for other makes and models are welcomed. First thought is a 357/38 so i can plink with it but i'm not stuck on 357 in all honesty. I just don't know what i like yet so i want to find an IP that has some i can hold. I did shoot a friends GP100 one time and think it could be a possible. Oh, and i'm not looking for the cowboy styles yet either.

    Best bets are:
    S&W 686 (new or used)
    S&W 66 (new or used)
    Ruger GP100 (new or used)
    Ruger Security Six (used)

686 and GP100 are large frames. 66 and Security Six are medium frames.

The 686 was one i definitely like the look of but not even close to $500 from what i've seen. The S&W model 10 would be a great one, anyone have one?

Is $500 really not going to cut it for a reasonably good revolver???

You can buy a nice, used revolver for $500 or less. You will just need to be patient and shop around. I found my GP100 for less than $400 and it was in like new condition.

There was a .38 Special S&W 64 with 4 inch barrel in the the classifieds last week and a selection of other revolvers here in the past couple of months so keep your eyes peeled.

$500 will absolutely get you a very nice used one, including the GP100 and maybe 686. I bought an unfired, like-new Security Six not long ago for $450 at a local gun shop. You can typically get nice, older .38 Special revolvers like the Model 10 for $300 to $350. There are lots of good options out there for your budget.

x whatever. $500 is definitely enough for nice used revolver. Call 2A Sales. I was in there last night and they had a good selection of used blue revolvers IIRC. Tom knows Im a shiny stainless guy so didn't pay too much attention.

Don't buy a Taurus;) oh snap!

You can a nice older S&W for well under 500 bucks.

The Ruger SP101 in 357 is a fine revolver too.

And as others have stated, stay away from a recently made Taurus.

The Taurus Model 85s from 12-15 years ago are great guns.

I'd go for a used Smith & Wesson over a new Taurus any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

Lou at Shooter's Discount periodically has police trade ins at good prices. Check with him.

Definitely check with shooters discount. I've often seen used revolvers there and his prices are always good. I got a used S&W 64 from him a couple years ago.
