Never saw a NiCS status. Just went to Approved in the last couple hours
I moved out of the republic last month but took the training before I left
Now in TN and loving it. Only took about two weeks to get. TN permit and it was a lot cheaper
Only got MD...
My antenna is a non-resonant antenna on any band. There is a 9:1 UnUn at the feed point and a counterpoise is required. If you don’t add a counterpoise, the shield of the coax becomes the counterpoise. That is not recommended; but that is what happens.
My antenna is feed about 5 ft up the trunk...
In radio communications, the importance of components is ranked as 1) propagation 2) antenna 3) radio. Propagation is the most important and impossible to control. Some of us have limitations on antennas because of the hoa and/or county regs. Fortunately, wires do very well if you install them...

I ordered a case of Herters 9 on 4/18. Picked them up at the store on Monday. I ordered a case of 45s on may 8. They’re on the way to the store for pickup today or tomorrow. I agree they’re web site and inventory control is weak. But I am getting the ammo at regular prices. I can’t...
That will make a big difference. I just tried to get a New Zealand station on 20m. He heard me but couldn’t make out my call. That’s with 100w and a wire. I’ll try again later as conditions may improve

Sorry. No joy. 5w is going to be tough and we are too close. You need to get the antenna higher. 40m is better in the evenings if you can do it. Also the bands are not real good right now

Hamstudy.org has both the old and new material on there web. I used this web sight when I studied for all three test. Very good system

I agree with all the advice here. I passed all three tests well; but, getting on the air was another experience that showed that book learning doesn’t get it all done. I learned a lot more and understood much better after getting on the air.

I agree with buying new. Icon has one under $600 and Yaesu under $700. I would recommend the Yaesu because you get both 6m and built in antenna tuner neither of which are on the cheap icon unit. I have a Yaesu 450D and it is a good rig. It’s my backup now.

I think you need permission to use any repeater for a net. If you are thinking SHTF scenarios, you have to consider that a) repeaters may not be up and b) they may be dedicated to emergency traffic (RACES etc).
Simplex will not work well for a large area do to line of sight. That is why HF is...
You need a General license for HF. Yes, you have some CW rights assuming you know CW. 10m is not open very much at this point and not reliable.
A new rig can be had for maybe $600 at the lowest on sale. A used newer rig for maybe a little less. Don’t forget the antenna. That is very important...
I agree, though, 160m may be a bit too big for some. I find that 80m at night works well. I was on the hospital net last night on 80m and everyone was coming through well including one from the Philadelphia area. 40m is generally too long for close contact.

That is strictly FM. 10m and 6m is basically useless. The FTM100 is on sale for 290 at HRO. If you want dual vfo with cross band, then get the 400.
Plus you get c4fm on both.

The Ftm100 also has aprs and gps. The main difference is the 400 has two independent VFOs. You can do cross band repeat with the 400 because of that. They are both excellent radios. I have ftm100s
They also have c4fm mode which is Yaesu’s digital mode.
