Yikes! Considering that you don't have real insight into their paperwork process beyond the form you fill out, and also the politics involved working in government, getting process changes is a bitch unless you have a supportive leadership for the change, especially if it is an ESTABLISHED...
Agree with all the above - got one for the wife for her first pistol until one day she can get a serious pistol. The sights on that thing are not worth even using - better to just aim in the general direction and hope for a hit.

Easiest way for your is to look at contracting companies (Lockheed, General Dynamics, CSC, CAIC, etc) - but if you don't have a degree, some previous IT experience, and a CISSP cert, you will be banging your head against a wall. However, be prepared to fill out a SF86...commercial-only Infosec...
This is why in IT I strongly believe in pushing yourself up or lateral moves every 2-3 years to keep fresh. Training is always a big plus - I really hate certs; hands-on will always win over a cert.
