      Amateur Radio FAQ

Come to think of it 14.230 is in the SSTV area of 14.230 to 14.236. A lower band may be better for close in, maybe 40 or 80M. 60M (5MHz) is also a really good band for local and DX. I may be mobile a bit during the day but I can do 80M to 6M from the mobile.

      Amateur Radio FAQ

I use the IC-7200 as my "digital rig" as well as my grab and go, and backup rig. I have a nice Pelican case it goes into with a power supply and other bits. I take it when I go down to the house we re building in rural eastern NC. It has a direct USB interface and emulates a soundcard and com...

      Amateur Radio FAQ

Did you find anything there? Take a look at the IC-718, some nice bang for the buck. The IC-7200 is another good low cost rig as well as the TS-480 radios. The TS-590 has a really good receiver as identified in Sherwood labs test. I had considered the 590 to replace my 756PROIII but I...

      Amateur Radio FAQ

Well my statement wasn't really meant to make sense, and it drives me nuts when I always run into that answer, unfortunately it fit here.

      Amateur Radio FAQ

The short answer is "that's the way we have always done it!". But you are right, if you have a given antenna that is say 1000 ohms you could build an amp that had an 1000 ohm output and feed it with 1000 ohm line. But to my original answer, we have over the years standardized on coax which is...

      Amateur Radio FAQ

Exactly, if you know the reason behind the answer vs just memorizing it wont matter much, if at all. I studied the previous Extra class guide and took the test under the new pool and missed just 1 question.

      Amateur Radio FAQ

Yes, many clubs including the AARC that I belong too revert to battery power. they are 1 tool in your ECOMM toolkit. BTW, although these CHICOM radios are crap (cant meet their own published specs on TX or RX), here is a way to take 2 of them and make a repeater. Although they probably...
