How do you declare the gun in checked baggage? Is there a form to be filled out -- or do you just tell the checker verbally?

I want to ship a rifle I own from MD to me in Florida. Questions:
1. Can I take it with me by commercial plane in checked luggage without a big fuss?
2. Is it FedEx or UPS which is the most user-friendly for such a ship?

I was in On Target this morning and they are very busy. They were saying they expect a 4-5 hours wait for pick-up on the last few days of the month -- and they aren't going to stay open past their normal closing time on the 30th.
For me, he may have won a battle but he's lost the war. I am moving to Florida and taking my taxes with me. No HQL, no income tax, carry permits no sweat, and no snow shoveling.
I've had high regard for CF. I suspect that the problem may be that he has a full-time job and has others man the store most of the time, and it's inconvenient for him to come in for you rather than deal with it at his convenience.

Well, shooting someone breaking into your car is going to give you a raft-load of trouble, that is clear, because your safety is not threatened. If you go out to the car, and your safety is threatened by the thief, and you shoot, you are in a gray area and will need a good lawyer and a good story.
