ebay has fakes tho... what about locally?

I bought my first Benchmade at Chesapeake Knife and Tool (no longer open). But I have bought other Benchmades from Edgeworks in Frederick City. An awesome store. They carry Spyderco, Benchmade, Buck, CRKT, Leatherman, SOG and others I can't remember off the top of my head.

I'm a big fan of Spyderco's but they seem a little brittle as I have broken 2 of them. My daily carry is a Native III. Awesome knife.

I have a leek with the 1/2 serrated blade and DO NOT buy one. Stick with the non-serrated version. I love the leek design, but the serrations are lousy. Too thin at the edge and tend to fold over when used. Not good. I agree about the safety. I disabled mine the first week. It has a nasty habit of closing and it is pain to open again.

    I can't refute that.
I understood that blue, black and gold are US made; red and everything else was not.
I just searched the Benchmade website and couldn't find anything about Bone Collector series.

I did see that the red class has been discontinued. Perhaps they saw the error in their ways and have pulled all manufacturing back to the US?

Some Wal Marts sell Kershaws, Bucks, and Gerbers.
    Unfortunately no Benchmades at WM.
The one in Prince Frederick just got a bunch of knives including Buck Vantage knives for under $30. Also gun shows are good places to buy knives. Ebay is pretty good if you know what you're looking for, you can find good prices there.

Ya, I dunno. I haven't heard anything about manufacturing overseas but then again I wasn't looking as the first two I bought (both blue line) both said USA on them. I hope they aren't but if they are, they are still good knives.

I've owned S&W, Benchmade, Spyderco, CKRT, and Boker. Right now my favorite is Spyderco. I like Benchmade, but they tend to be overpriced compared to spyderco, and their axis lock presents a legal problem in more than a few areas.

I think in general a blade of 2.5 - 3 inches is enough for most utility tasks. For steels, I like 154CM, VG-10, and AUS-8. Those are my current favorite stainless steels. Good edge retention, easily sharpened, not too brittle.

My current EDC is a Spyderco Endura4 FFG. But I don't use it for hard use stuff at ALL, and it doubles as a defensive folder. Nice long blade...and the full flat grind makes cutting WONDERFUL.

If you are going to beat up your blade, you will want to stay away from full flat grinds, as they have delicate tips and can snap. You'll also want some stainless steel liners to give your blade extra strength.

As far as serrated vs partially serrated vs plain edge, I prefer plain edge. The only thing I've ever had to do where I wished I had a partially serrated blade was cut rope. In general plain edges are fine.

I think a good all around EDC you might want to check out is the Spyderco Delica4. http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=SP11PBK4
(That one is pictured with a partially serrated edge, though its really the plain edge, should you decide to order it. You'll have to decide whether you want the combo edge or the plain edge.) The knife has a 2 7/8 " blade which is a great all around length. It's very light, but has some skeletonized stainless steel liners to give it a little added strength. Great pocket clip, and the awesome thing is that you can change to any of the four positions. (Tip up or tip down, left or right side of the blade.) I really like the spyder hole vs the thumb studs. Its much easier to open when wearing gloves, and even when not wearing gloves, it is plenty fast. The steel, VG-10, is a great steel. Nothing bad I can really say about it. I don't THINK I'm forgetting anything. GREAT all around blade, and is EDCd by a LOT of people.

    Good luck to you!

Whoops just saw this post. I don't have any experience with the M16, but have both a Griptillian and a Mini Griptillian. GREAT knives. However I PERSONALLY am not a fan of the tanto style blades. Unless you're going to use your blade for prying/scraping and piercing hard materials, it isn't useful IMHO. However if you're going to use it for prying and piercing then it might be for you.

    Anyway, griptillians are sweet.
