im completely new to suppressors and i will be buying my first one shortly. are there any suppressors out there that can be used on multiple calibers, not just one? like can you switch out the insides to work with what caliber you want? would you need seperate tax stamps for multiple insides? (sorry i dont know the correct terminology)

The general answer is yes you can use suppressors with multiple calibers. Suppressors are rated for certain calibers. Typically smaller less powerful rounds will be compatible. For example a 308 will be able to hand 223 and 300 Blackout. For specific caliber combinations check with the specific manufacturer to verify compatibility.

Normally pistol suppressors need a booster device to allow the barrel to disengage from the slide. Those are normally threads of varying dimensions between calibers. Long gun suppressors normally use a quick disconnect system like the 51T QD that AAC uses with their rifle cans.

So no one can normally is used for both rifles and pistols. IE, I have an Osprey 45 for my pistols and an AAC SDN6 for my long guns.

Not sure where you are located, but go see one of the IP's like Duffy's, Engage, 2A, etc. They will walk you through the entire process.
If you plan on using one on a 22, you should consider a dedicated 22 can.

Silencers are like Utz, betcha can't eat just one....

A Gemtech Multimount has adapters for multiple thread pitches. Including a disconnector for pistols and a 3 lug mount.

It is rated for full auto 9mm, 5.7, .22lr And subsonic 300blk. I got this as my first and added a 5.56. A dedicated .22lr is on the way.

It can also be opened for cleaning

OP- not picking on you but if people would list their location under their name it would help everyone answer a lot of questions. Anyway
If in Balt county or near, Duffys would be a good place to learn
If towards DC, I'd recommend Engage Armament 1st and 2A Sales 2nd just because of selection.
A lot depends on calibers you want and whether high powered rifle or pistol. My AAC Osprey .45 can also be used on a 9MM with the adapter.
My SDN 6 in .308 can be used on anything smaller, .223 etc.
Silencerco Sparrow is a .22 can that can be used on .22 mag, .17HNR, 17HM2, .22 Hornet . So you need to do some homework. Best to stop in one of the IP's mentioned.

I dont list my location because i really have no problem driving wherever i need to go to get what i want. :D

Thank you for the recommendations. I really have no clue what companies are out there and what is offered. I think ill be stopping in Engage soon anyway for a new AR so might as well check out the suppressors also.

i didnt know there was a difference, you cant use one for both?

The absence or presence of a stock does not make any difference. The issue is one of cartridge compatibility. Pistol caliber suppressors (large diameter bullets, small capacity cases) are typically not compatible with rifle caliber suppressors (small diameter bullets, large case capacity) and vise versa. There are exceptions, but you need to check with the manufacturer to determine specific cartridge compatibility.

    I shoot a Ti-RANT 45 on a 45ACP and a 9mm; you just have to swap out the piston.

Rather than just having a separate end cap, are there any cans with baffles meant for multiple calibers? Or would having separate 9mm baffles for a .45 can not make much/any difference in the level of suppression? Would it even be legal to do so? I'm in a similar situation as the OP so excuse me if this is an obvious answer.
