I have always been a AK guy and always will be but I would like to see builds people have done and cost. I also was wondering if SPR builds are worth the money.

I dunno about SPR builds; from what I saw, SOCOM was moving away from Mk 12 to SCARs (Mk 17). It's also interesting how AKs were moving from the 7.62x39 down to the 5.45x39, while we are trying to move from 5.56x45 up to a 30 cal round (like the 300 AAC). Looks like the golden ticket is somewhere in between the longer, heftier 30 cal round of the 7.62 and the lighter .223 round. I think on his youtube video review of the 300 AAC, sootch00 said it was a like the 7.62x39 and the 5.56 had a beautiful baby in the 300 AAC (with respect to accuracy and stopping/penetrating power while still being used in an AR platform).

To make a short story long, and then sum it up, if money is a limiting factor, try the AR15 300 AAC build. You can use all your AR15 components (mags, bolts, upper, lower) and just swap out for a 300 AAC barrel, or get an entire upper assembly for around $350. Spartan Tactical in Frederick sells the uppers at that price, but I'm still unfamiliar with the supersonic/subsonic with suppressor pros and cons. It was designed to be fired with a suppressor and still have close ballistics with 7.62 but have better muzzle velocity at longer distances.

Go 300 AAC build, then look into a Liberty Mystic-X supressor (which uses multiple caliber adapters for multiple firearms). Tell me how that build goes if you do go that route.

So ... Are you thinking a Mk12 replica on purpose , or an accurate , medium size , medium heavy AR in general ?

I had Wes Grant from MSTN build me 18" and 20" Super SAM (squad augmented marksman) uppers a few years ago. These behemoths feature Lilja barrels, and turned in better groups than my MK12 with Black Hills ammo.

I'll try to post pics in a bit.

FWIW, I did an SPR-type build (18" match bbl, rifle length gas system) but left out the PRI tube and SWAN sleeve. I went with a Daniel Defense free float. accuracy was good, but my 24" varmint rig has a velocity advantage (and with handloads shoots a bit better) so that's the one that I shoot. Eventually sold the SPR upper. May do another, but honestly I'll probably just do a compact bolt gun.

Here are two of my builds, and a breakdown of their costs. The first one is more of a 3 gun build, but if you swap out the optics for a 3x-9, I would consider it a SPR.

Short answer, YES. I love my 18" WOA SPR build. I just got the load figured for it and it will put 4 rounds of 69gr Nosler CC into .55" at 100 yards all day. Yes the stainless barrel is heavier but the rifle length gas system is great to shoot. I recommend building one to have in the collection.

I think there are youtube videos of guys hitting 1000+ yard targets using 110 grain 300 AAC Hornady rounds, maybe even one with a supressor. I'll try to find it...

a 9mm will travel 1000 yards if you hold it at the right angle. It doesnt mean its ideal.

My two SPR builds totaled $1200 each, give or take. Optics and mounts not included. One is a 20" 6.8 SPC, the other is an 18" 5.56. I've used both in 3-Gun.
