Can anyone recommend a good bipod for a Savage Axis in .308? I'm new to the bolt gun game and know nothing about bipods. I would preferably want something that worked well off the bench, but I could potentially use to hunt as well.

Plus, do they just clip on to the front sling post?

A bench length bipod is kinda short for hunting, though in some cases I have used mine where I could lay prone and didn't have any tall growth to shoot over, but a taller Harris will work well for hunting, not much for benchrest.

    It takes two.. lol

Harris is probably the go to choice for a sling swivel mount, have used a couple of those for way longer than I am going to tell and they still perform like the day they were new.. ;)

For field/tactical use, 6-9: is too short for most people. Go with the 9-13". BT, DT

Also, Harris is the best of the reasonably priced ones. Get a swivel version and add a PodLock or one of the knockoffs.

The next step up from Harris is the Atlas. That IIRC, they are only rail mount, so you need to put a rail section on your rifle to use one.

I like the Harris with the notches in the legs. No slippage.

If you don't shoot on uneven terrain, the swivel isn't a must have IMO.

I agree, the notches are nice, no slippage.

WRT the swivel, especially at longer ranges, it is VERY important to have the reticle vertical when you shoot. And very few places are PERFECTLY level. :)

Another vote for the Harris here. I use the 6-9 HBRMS with a throw lever installed.

I have Atlas bipods and would only have an Atlas or a GG&G.
I hate external springs on any bipod.

What I miss and wish someone would start to manufacture again are the types of bipods made years ago by Forster Products.

They were simple, sturdy, relatively inexpensive and I could use them with any rifle outdoors.

I spent many an hour Varmint hunting with these:
