On my safe the notched rails are offset, so that it actually will hold five and five. But the issue is that there are notches along the back wall (that were counted in the total.). In reality, you can't put rifles along the back wall, since there's no place for the buttstocks to go....the floorspace is occupied by the guns lining the sides.

That said, as you noted, the buttstocks lean across the centerline, which leaves space between the guns and the sidewalls of the safe. I've been able to store some narrow rifles in that space (like unscoped lever guns) having them lean forward, resting against the front door frame.

Ah ha! and don't forget those stock pouches festooned with lots of extra rounds and other goodies;)

Ive got my tinfoil hat on so I will tell. noting exotic in the collection no heirlooms 930 spx,vz2008,glock 19, Sd9ve, average 4 mags per gun about 2k in replaceable stuff. There has to be some rough ratio of how much to spend to save 2k that should( double checking) be covered by insurance.

    thanks for most input :D

If it hasn't been mentioned yet, try Amazon. I got mine with free shipping to the garage exterior.

Regarding size, I have the 10 gun safe about that size. If you don't have scopes, you can fit 10. But only two longer barrel shotguns will fit and they have to be closest to the door unless you remove the top shelf.

I had to put this safe where I put it. It was the only one that fit.

10 did have one advantage. Kept me around 10 so the wife doesn't kill me..... :party29:

I went to Tractor Supply and got a 24 gun Winchester safe. Very reasonably priced and I am happy with the quality.

...I am happy with the quality.

Just out of curiosity, upon what, do you base that statement?

Shiny paint? Nice hefty bolt control handle? Pretty interior? Big, chrome, door bolts?

I find it amusing when people comment on the "quality" of a safe, going only by outward appearance.

The only way to know the quality of a safe is to remove the back panel of the door and see how it was constructed, or, after a fire or burglary attempt, see how well it held up.

Have you taken apart one of the Winchester safes?

I do warranty work for Winchester (Granite Security).

They make a line of very nice safes. They also make a line of cheap big box store safes for the consumer whose main interest in "price". Pull the back panel and even a laymen can quickly tell the difference.

Is this a statement against Winchester (Granite Security)? Absolutely not!

They, like many other safe manufacturers are just giving the consumer what they want. Different consumers want different things. Some want quality. Some want cheap. (Seldom are the two found together in one product.)

This reminds me of something that was written on the website of a gun engraver. Think he engraved 1911s for the most part.

I can do cheap, I can do fast, I can do quality, I might be able to do two of the three, but there is no way you can get all three.

Our company policy is to provide quality materials and workmanship to our customers. And we charge accordingly.

If you want it done "cheap", which one would you prefer us to leave out?

On a side note, a friend of mine opened one a while back that sat for a long time after the fire, because of an arson investegation. (Owner was eventually cleared.) Because the safe wasn't opened right away, all of the guns in it were ruined. Had it been opened right away (as soon as things cooled down) they could have been saved.
    .

And that's a good point about cooling down. I understand that they can actually explode or flame-up bigtime if someone opens them before they have cooled inside, correct?

    Never heard that.

But usually, a professional has to open it, because the dail or keypad usually melts off.

Dude, from personal experience I can say that we totally underestimate the size of space we need. Unless you need it now, I would say wait and try to save for a bigger one. :)

Something about the lack of Oxygen, followed by a sudden introduction of it into the opened safe.
In certain conditions the sudden introduction of oxygen can cause a rapid ignition in an oxygen starved environment if fuel and high enough heat are present. This is the cause of back drafts in building fires. For this to occur, you still need a temperature high enough to support flame and if its that hot, you aren't going to be screwing with in the first place
