So I'm working on putting together my shopping list for a precision upper. Now comes the issue of what ff rail/tube? Now, I don't really want an uber $$$ rail (I'd rather use that money for the barrel). I also don't need rails, keymods, etc. Just a place to mount a bipod and maybe a sling. So I was looking at the following....

    MI SS G2...
    Nordic Components HG...
    Sampson EVO...
    Seekins SP3G...

Now the Seekins is a little pricey, but damn it's a sexy rail, and I like the idea of the flats for stability in shooting of a pack/bag or barricades (should I decide to try 3-gun).

Thoughts? I'm very intrigued by the Nordic rails. No, they're not the lightest, but damn the price is VERY tempting, and I've heard some good reviews of them on BrianEnos.

Light, strong, inexpensive. Pick two. You aren't getting all three for under $200. Although the YHM Lightweight FF rail setup isn't bad.

Yeah, yeah...I know. I also realize there will be some compromise, but I'm no HSLD operator. I'm more HDLS. :innocent0

I like my Fortis rev, but it comes in 14" as the longest and has keymod. But its light, free float, and not super expensive. Its funny you say you want the lightest, and then reject keymod. Yes, lets reject a method of attaching things that actually removes metal (Making it lighter) from the handguard instead of adding it like full picatinny does.

My Stag 3G upper came with a 15" Samson EVO and I really liked that. Enough so I bought a shorter one for my 14.5 carbine. Since then I have gone with the AP Custom railed 15" carbon fiber handguard on the Stag to get some more weight off and now I like that one so much I even bought one for my competition S&W 15-22. The AP 15" single rail one is right at your limit of $200 if bought from MidawayUSA. It is also nice that it screws into a bracket that sandwiches the barrel nut (must be removed to mount it). No cement like some of the CF handguards. There is no real inherent advantage of a flat bottom handguard in 3-gun. One of the deciding factors on what handguard you want will depend on how you place your off hand way down at the end of the handguard. Everyone realizes you need your hand down on the end for max leverage and handling but there are as many way to hold it as there are handguard makers.

He's also rejecting rails. I think he just wants a free float tube.

Troy is a no-go for me.

I'm not so much rejecting key mod because it's keymod, but more because of the "latest/greatest=$$$$" issue. That being said I have less issue with key mod over picatinny. I have no need for all sorts of rail estate for this particular upper. If I can find a reasonable fore end that happens to be keymod, so be it.

How study is the AP tube? I like that no glue is required.

Ok, I dont want to derail this thread; however, why why why would someone want a short rail/handgaurd? there is less surface area for stability on another surface, ie tree, rock, etc...

I have always had a Long handguard and for stability with off hand shots it's great, even with my deer rifle or shotgun i despise feeling as if i'm cramped taking a shot. I't not as if in the Civy world were jumping out of or hanging out of humvees .... so enlighten me please.

I don't know how quick you need this by BCM just put their KMR on the market yesterday. I ordered the 13" model and supposedly they will have a 15" model by early summer. They are the lightest on the market. The 13" weighs 7.7 ounces with the barrel nut.
