I ended up refinishing the original DD and a new fore grip. Best of both worlds.

Removal of front grip
I think this is interesting because I remember seeing photographs from Africa that showed the front grip sawn off. The caption stated it was done to make the weapon more concealable and less likely to become tangled in brush.
I believe only Rumanian models had the wooden grip. I know the Hungarian AMD also had a fore grip, but military models were made of a man made material.
