I think it looks better that way. Less plain.

Like a stainless 1911 with blued controls, or vice versa.
I know the barrel shroud is black ABS (or something) and I can accept that. I can reluctantly accept the blued mag. But... the blued front sight on the stainless steel barrel is just WRONG. Why can't it be stainless? Why blue'd? Did the V.C. run out of parts?

The front sight block was originally stainless to match the barrel and reciever, but they changed them to blued because there was better contrast in most shooting situations. It also was found to cause less glare, but if you think about it, this makes no sense. That's because I made it all up. I have no idea why it isn't stainless.

Here's a replacement part that will really upset you.

I have a wood and stainless ranch that is my go to varmint gun so that is how I voted. I would also buy a wood and blue if the price is right. United has/had one but wouldn't answer any questions about it so I said fvkem and kept my money.

Go old school - blue & wood.
It’s a ranch rifle, so buy a cowboy hat and some boots.

I like the look of stainless and wood. Overall, if I were to want a Mini 14, it would be an A-Team special, but those are much too dangerous for us mortals here in MD.

For a used Min-14, I have read that the 580+ serials are a significant upgrade to the older models, and that the 581+ serials have a thicker barrel as well. I would not consider a used Mini-14 with a pre 580 serial.

[EDIT] Well - to be really specific; looks like any serial at or after 580-76276 uses the heavier barrel.
