I never had a chain fire either.
I use wheel bearing (AXLE) grease and corn meal filler to get the ball up to the cylinder front.
Then smear the grease over the chamber mouths.

This. I used to use wheel bearing grease over the balls. It's cheap, won't melt in the heat, and you can dispense it from a syringe type cake decorator. Also use it to grease up the arbor.

I've also filled the base cavities of minie balls with it, and it seemed to work fine. You can also use it to grease your Garand.

    Something like this:

Question: Can these be converted to a cartridge? I want to leave them black powder of course but curious if it is something that can be done. Notwithstanding that it would require registering as pistols and all the legal stuff around that.

.38 Colt was originally a heel based bullet like 22lr still is with the same diameter as the case, sometime in the later 1800s it turned into a hollow base .358 diameter later to expand into bore rifling. You HAVE to use soft lead hollow base projectiles if you want them to work with .358, there are no exceptions. Lead projectiles only, too. If you load heel base bullets, the loading procedure is entirely different...but I have a heel based bullet mold that i load .38 Rimfire with...in fact I have 2 different heel based 38 molds.
