    I know there is a lot of bad information being rolled out in some of these classes. Much of it is opinion and just plain wrong. Leave that stuff out of this conversation; I think there's a training complaint thread you can post that in.
    My class was NRA basic pistol plus a section on Maryland rules and regulations. Most of us are aware of places where you legally can't carry, such as a post office. Some people are of the mind that concealed means concealed and what they don't know won't hurt them. I'd guess that most of us would have enough sense to avoid any place that has a metal detector. I'd also guess that many of you, like me, did not know about the new technology that scans your body for weapons many times without you even knowing about it.
    So what I learned was to be aware of the devices out there made by Evolv Technology. It's not always obvious that you are being scanned for a firearm.

    Fan Screening got me. I was picturing a big fan that would then allow the results to sniff your air for stuff. I mean they have dogs that can smell cancer and such. I find refrigerent leaks with a sniffer. Whew, who died.

    I learned that I'm out of practice with my pistol. Been shooting way more rifles and shotguns over the past 10 years, and usually only fire a few rounds out of my pistols just to make sure they still work. Gonna have to spend more time with them.

    I think the only thing I learned in my W&C class was that initial permits expire at the end of your birth month, so the initial permit is good for 2+ years. Potentially almost three years.

    If I get lucky and don't have my permit issued in the next three days (app accepted minutes ago), my initial permit will be good for almost three years. Just like subsequent renewals.

    I actually learned proper stance and grip. My aim greatly improved where it’s doesn’t matter if I’m 3yrd away or 15. I’m still hitting the X. Where before I was hitting low and left.

    That there is a silver lining to the fact that I need a joint replaced; since I've had it documented with doctor visit, mri, etc, it might help me in court (God forbid I end up there) since my ability to retreat has been clinically proven to be severely limited by my inability to run.

    Don't think I am not thinking of the same thing. With my arthritis and pushing my wife's wheelchair, I can't run so it will be stand and deliver.

    Defense of others can absolutely be a valid reason for use of deadly force in Maryland. Same basic rules apply as in other circumstances outside the home.

    Maryland Pattern Jury Instructions-Criminal (MPJI-Cr)
    MPJI-Cr 5:01 Defense of Others

    You have heard evidence that the defendant acted in defense of [name of person]. Defense of others is a defense, and you are required to find the defendant not guilty if all of the following four factors are present:
    (1) the defendant actually believed that the person he was defending was in immediate and imminent danger of bodily harm;
    (2) the defendant’s belief was reasonable;
    (3) the defendant used no more force than was reasonably necessary in light of the threatened or actual force; and
    (4) the defendant’s purpose in using force was to aid the person he was defending.

    In order to convict the defendant, the State must prove that the defense of others does not apply in this case. This means that you are required to find the defendant not guilty unless the State has persuaded you, beyond a reasonable doubt, that at least one of the four factors of defense of others was absent.

    I'm glad it is. I would find it very difficult to stand by and watch something horrible when it is within my ability to stop it.

    So if you are the one stopping the threat are you professionally bound to attempt to save their life after?

    Retreat doesn't always mean running. It could be to simply try to move around behind a car, etc... There's no minimum time limit on a retreat. Engaging with a threat is proximity driven.
