Trying to find a place to take a sample to today, Iron bacteria could be a culprit but there is zero smell to the water currently. Sediment make sense....maybe but I would think it would be more consistent and again show as discolored water. Will need to get someone out here eventually.

    Thanks for the assist!

Sediment won't discolor the water until it settles out, and then you'll see a layer on the bottom. Try filling a tall glass/vase with water let it settle and see if there is stuff on the bottom. Might just need an in line filter unit. When did this issue start? I may have missed that part.

Smell the hot water as it seems to smell more than the cold when you have iron bacteria.

When was the last time you chlorinated the well?

I do it at least once a year. Usually in late summer, we get something growing in the system. Chlorine takes care of it.

I have never, I do know it was done when we had the well tested when we bought the house in 2015. Honestly did not know that this was a thing to do or how to do it.

Alright, So I have received the water test back from Home Land Labs. Although it does give me insight into our water dynamics and will likely require a water treatment solution.....I am not sure that it identifies what changed in the last 7 years to cause the staining and discoloration of our water. If I move forward with a water treatment solution, couldn't that mask an issue with the well itself or should I just figure out how to chlorinate the well and look at adding a solution and be done with it.

    Parameter Result Pass/Fail/Acceptable RL
    Bacteria-Total Coliform Present Fail 1
    Bacteria - E-Coli Absent Pass 1
    Nitrate + Nitrite as N 2.6 Pass 0.5
    Nitrite - N Not Detected Pass 0.1
    Lead, Total 0.0158 Fail 0.002
Iron, Total Not Detected Acceptable 0.05
    Turbidity .9 Pass 0.5
    pH 6.5 None 1

We had Coliforms in our well water and we had to install a UV bulb that is supposed to remediate this. As for the lead a water treatment system will get rid of this since it is a cation. Doesn't seem like your iron is high enough for the iron bacteria theory. A sediment filter and the water softener should fix your issues. They are easy to maintain once installed but will require you to add salt to the salt tank periodically. Bags are about $15 for 50lbs and last a while depending on your refresh rate and water usage. I fill up my salt tank about every 3 months with 150lbs and keep one backup until I can get to the store. It is probably going to be fairly expensive.
