Oh man it really is. It’s just casual plinking out in the back. I miss shooting my powder burners in the backyard, but that’s not in the cards at this particular house. It’s nice to get out and shoot a solid rifle. I can’t say enough good about this HW50S. It really all comes down to me at this point. Really good performing rifle that I would recommend to any who are interested. You absolutely get what you pay for. That Rekord trigger really is something.

Howdy all! I shot the ole HW50 on Monday with my father in law. Boy I’m rusty! Kindled some fire in me to tighten back up. Was out yesterday (Tuesday) plinking around.

Here is a little baseline for my progress back to proficiency. 20y nothing wild. Swirling wind with gusts to 10mph. Total time firing was 9 minutes (quickly fast forwarded for video sakes). Turned out to be roughly 45 seconds between shot, cock, load, wait for wind, shoot. I hope for some more calm days, plus I do believe the ole gal needs a clean. Personally I know this rife and I have shot much more in tune with one another with ideal conditions.

Bear in mind…without wind I know the rifle can pull of five shots like this -

I reckon next time I shoot, I’ll clean it, and maybe try out a new pellet offering as well. I have only been shooting my H&N Barracuda Match, figure we will move to the Field Target Trophy’s!

I have done serious tests concerning speed, weight and size of pellets and slugs. The most significant factor for consistent results is pellet size. I use one of these made by a fellow named Jerry. They are expensive but they are well worth it if you want single hole results.

Excellent again John thank you! Matter of fact, I’m in a tight spot now. All of my pellets including the ones I’ve tried from a friends gift, they’re all too small. I need the fat boys in this one. And those Barracuda Match sure did well enough. Here’s a better clip from today -



Gave the rifle a clean. I had sixteen ‘cudas left. Then it took quite a few shots through until it would settle back down. My last six would have been just fine. Had it not been my poor follow through on shot one. Notice the “recoil” or bounce in the shoulder on shot one. No bueno! The rest of the shots were tight in. Next time!

If your rifle likes Barracuda Match ammo, I would try JSB Exact Jumbo 15.89 grains or Exact Jumbo Heavy 18.13 grains. Both of these are 5.52 mm which gives a tighter fit than H&N. I found I got more consistent results when using JSB Exact ammo vs the H&N.

I try to get more shooters to get into air stuff. Much cheaper and if you can't put them all in the same hole then no reason to do put $$ centerfire ammo down range.

Opps, my bad. I forgot you are using .177. The numbers I gave you were for .22. However, I don't see why JSB's would do the same for the .177.

This will take you to Pyramid Air's JSB page. I suggest you try the Exact 8.4 grains and the Exact Heavy at 10.34. Just shoot for groups first so you don't knock your sights out for a pellet that won't work for you. In case you don't know about Pyramidair, if you buy 3 tins of ammo, the 4th is free. Our club's juniors used to practice indoors with CO2 rifles. Now they have some nice PCP rifles and those kids can shoot pretty good. When they shoot outdoors, they use CMP rifles but, with the PCP's, they stay proficient since the weather doesn't stop them from shooting.
