    1. VCDL virtual membership meeting tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 17

REMINDER: This Thursday (which is the third Thursday of the month), February 17th, the VCDL holds our LIVE, online, general membership meeting at 8pm.

Tune in to get updates on what's happening with the 2A and A1S13 (Article I, Section 13 of the Virginia Constitution) in Virginia, including what’s going on at the General Assembly.

Click here to go to the VCDL YouTube channel: YouTube.com/c/VirginiaCitizensDefenseLeague

The meeting’s hosts are Ed Levine, Philip Van Cleave, and Pat Webb.

    2. Federal Action Item: Justice Breyer’s replacement

Gun Owners of America is having gun owners contact Congress to tell their Senators to vote no on any anti-gun Supreme Court candidates.

    3. Thoughts on what to do during an armed robbery of a store

One of our members asked me to discuss how to handle a situation like this, where an armed robber decided a CVS was his target:

    https://www.alxnow.com/2022/01/28/no-arrest-after-armed-robbery-at-west-end-cvs-store/

While every situation will have its own nuances, my suggestion in the situation in the above story would be to exit the building if you can safely do so. If not, then I would suggest finding a place to stay out of sight until the event is over. Usually the criminal is just after money or drugs. You are not the police and have no obligation to enforce Virginia law.

Things get dicey if the criminal is clearly about to execute the clerk or another innocent person. Again, you have no obligation to get involved, but you can do so legally, if you are willing to put your own life at risk. That is a very personal choice and your own conscience will have to be your guide.

An even more dicey situation would exist if the armed criminal is approaching YOU. Now you will have to decide to either play it cool and let the criminal have your wallet and pray that he doesn’t want to kill you. Or, if you reasonably feel that your life is in immediate danger, you can engage the bad guy with your firearm. There’s no guarantee you will survive such a gun fight, but if he was going to kill you anyway, you have nothing to lose.

Whatever happens, call the police immediately. Such stores have security cameras, which will hopefully have documented the whole incident.

    4. Discount to VCDL members on photography

John Gervasi PhotoArts is a professional photographer in Haymarket, Virginia, offering corporate, social media and performing artist headshot photographs and portrait photographs. He sent me the following offer for VCDL members:

    5. Richmond Mayor Stoney to waste money on gun buy-up

Under the guise of doing something about violent crime in the city (up 40% since the City passed local gun-control), Richmond Mayor, but not Mensa member, Levar Stoney has decided a gun buy-up will lower the City’s murder rate.

Yep. Criminals are going to turn in their guns, Mr. Mayor. <eye roll> Just like offering a crack cocaine buy-up would stop crack-cocaine addiction in its tracks.

Expect crime in Richmond to continue at its current rate or increase as long as Stoney and the current City Council is in power.

    6. Key parts of self-defense law is covered in this new story from Winchester, VA

So, two dudes break into a home and dude #1 attacks the homeowner in his bed with a metal pipe. The homeowner, fearing for his life, fires one shot from a rifle at dude #1, but misses and accidentally hits dude #2, who was in the process of fleeing.

Dude #2 dies and Dude #1, and not the homeowner, is charged with his murder.

Two self-defense items in Virginia come up.

If a criminal is involved in a violent crime and someone dies as a result, even if it’s the criminal’s partner, the criminal gets the murder rap.
If an innocent victim, fearing for his life during an attack, lawfully and non-recklessly shoots, but misses, his attacker and hits another person, the attacker is charged with the murder.

    7. Many thanks to Vortex and AR15.com for donation to VCDL!

Vortex Optics donated items to AR15.com to auction off in support of VCDL. To top that off, Vortex offered to match the money raised!

The AR15.com auction brought in $3,805.08! Vortex matched it by adding another $4,000!! That brings the total to $7,805.08.

I’m totally awestruck by this. Many, many thanks to the generous gun owners/VCDL members at http://ar15.com and to Vortex Optical, which made the auction possible at https://vortexoptics.com.

    8. Interesting series on guns misused in crime, including tracing

    Reports from WTKR in Tidewater:

    https://www.newsbreak.com/news/2514...gun-crime-cases-at-newport-news-forensics-lab

    9. Good statistics in this letter by Senator Grassley to DOJ

    Senator Grassley reminds DOJ that:

Recovered guns in all 50 states (57 states if you are Obama) are, by far, mostly guns from that state and not from the so called “iron pipeline” coming from other states
The number of people murdered by someone misusing a homemade gun is less than 0.36%
Only 7% of firearms used in a crime were acquired through a legal purchase from a dealer, compared to 56% of such guns that were stolen or purchased on the black market
