    URGENT LEGISLATIVE ACTION ALERT! 1/22/23

    Monday a group of 17 gun-bills is going to be heard in the Virginia Senate Judiciary committee! The committee meeting starts at 8am in Senate Committee Room A in the Pocahontas Building (9th and Main).

    If you can attend in person, please do so. You can also attend on Zoom by clicking here and selecting “Judiciary – SRA – 8:00 am”. You can register to provide public comment at the meeting remotely by clicking here.

    Here are the bills being heard with a very short summary. (It’s possible that some of the bills might end up being heard on Wednesday afternoon if time runs out Monday morning.) Bill numbers in blue are support, red is oppose, and black is neutral:

    SB 805, Senator Chase, strengthens the firearm preemption law

    SB 898, Senator Stuart, adds another group that can offer CHP classes

    SB 909, Senator Favola, only 21 or older and living elsewhere can hold guns for someone who is temporarily prohibited

    SB 918, Senator Morrissey, “assault firearm” ban, magazine ban, carry restrictions

    SB 1067, Senator Surovell, expands Red Flag law provisions

    SB 1139, Senator Boysko, firearms must be locked up in a home if someone under 18 is present unless the gun is carried on the person

    SB 1167, Senator Petersen, opens the door to civil lawsuits against the firearms industry

    SB 1181, Senator Ebbin, requires unfinished firearms and frames to be serialized, including a chunk of aluminum that can be milled into a frame.

    SB 1192, Senator Ebbin, “assault firearm” ban, magazine ban, carry restrictions

    SB 1236, Senator Obenshain, strengthens the firearm preemption law

    SB 1283, Senator Edwards, expands definition of “assault firearm” and limits to those over 21

    SB 1353, Senator Norment, extends mandatory minimums for certain crimes with firearms

    SB 1378, Senator DeSteph, increases penalties for violent crime

    SB 1382, Senator Deeds, bans both “assault firearms” and magazines that hold more than 10 rounds made after 7/1/2023

    SB 1488, Senator Chase, repeals unconstitutional “Red Flag” law

    SB 1489, Senator DeSteph, bans carry in hospitals (bill will be withdrawn if CHP holders are not exempt)

    SB 1492, Senator DeSteph, off-duty and retired VSP officers can carry on state property
