Thread Protector Keeps Coming Loose

Shot 350 rounds through my M&P 22 compact. Shot well, but the thread protector kept coming loose; had to tighten every second mag. What can I use to tighten it? Just more elbow grease?

I had the same issue on my FNP tactical. Solution is to slide a rubber O ring over the threads then screw on the thread protector, work great.

For a second there I thought I read "red loctite" and was thinking "is that a good idea?".

A few wraps of plumber's Teflon thread tape will fix it. A roll is about a buck at the hardware store. Heat resistant, too, although I guess on a .22 that's not a big deal.

Ok - I have blue Loctite and Teflon tape on hand; so will try one of those.

I used Rockset on my 300bo. We'll see how it holds up.

Rockset has the advantage of being heat resistant, whereas LockTite comes loose with heat. Neither should be needed for a .22 rimfire and the o-ring or teflon tape is probably plenty.

Problem is to get it back off.

Blue Loctite can be fairly easily removed.

I would try Teflon tape first.

If you don't use such devices, then Rockset is fine.

But why to you have a threaded barrel with a protector then???????????????

I have a can in jail and that is the plan. However - when not using said can I don't want the thread protector to come off.

Just get a high-temp Viton O-ring of the proper size, roll that down over the barrel threads, and seat the thread protector against it. That or a wrap of teflon tape. Either one will keep the protector from spinning loose and will be easily removable.

Rocksetting your thread protector on is perhaps a little extreme.

I use the grey hi temp teflon tape. Its much thicker. It only takes one wrap around the threads to make it tight.

Rockset is overkill for that.

I would try teflon tape or blue Loctite.

There is something wrong here. I would stay away from Loctite, because Loctite loosens with heat. Teflon tape should work, but you'll have to replace it whenever you remove/clean your suppressor. That could get to be aggravating.

There is nothing wrong, and he's not talking about a suppressor. He's talking about a thread protector. They come loose if they're not tightened on enough.

Small silicon o ring (ETA Viton) will do the trick or plumber's tape. I definitely wouldn't use loctite.

I used an o ring on my FNX45 for a pistol class; almost 700 rounds, no loosening. Here are the ones I bought:

You can probably get smaller ones for a 22.
