If you prep for any situation you are a target. If I were a bad guy intent on taking stuff from others I would do it at night with my thermal.
That's a silly cliche that MAY apply to urban populations. The rest of the statement may be true but many bad guys aren't too bright and most smart one understand nighttime risks. Most people don't have the resources for a 1 yr supply of food much less thermal sights. As I've said before, each individual has to prioritize their preps. Food, water, shelter, first aid, no-frills weapons that can take a beating and don't require batteries, solar heating/cooking are my top oned

Is this superior to any thermal hunting hogs under 100 yards price wise?
I don't know the first thing about thermal other than it's pricey. And Cool. And I don't have the money available to buy it.
I was scrolling through Palmetto state's sales and came across this deal so I put up the link

Me too. I hope the MDS gurus will weigh in on the best helmet system/s to scan for pigs around 100-200 yards and what should be on the rifle to seal the deal once the targets are identified.

I use a monocular to scan. I can’t stand wearing any kind of hat. As far as scopes go there are many and price will usually have the final say. I had gave up an expensive hobby so I rolled some of that into a pricey night setup. Like most tech each year better options are coming out and the prices get lower on the “outdated “ products that are still way better than most people need.

A rifle mounted therm and a tripod are really all you need for pigs. Scan and shoot. That seems to be how most people do it from what I've seen on telly.

I don't have a helmet setup. Wish I had a monocular to scan with! That will be my next purchase most likely a agm-taipan 384. I've only used 2 thermals an older pulsar thermion xm30 and a agm rattler ts35-384. The rattler blows away the older pulsar but that model thermion is pretty outdated and has been discontinued for some time. Prices are getting better as tech improves. Night vision scopes are reasonably priced for what you get these days. Multiple options under $1k now that work. The sightmark wraith HD can be had for about $5-600 and is usable out to 300yds under the right conditions. NV will never give you the detection that thermal will though. Not even close but someone on a budget could pickup a wraith and a agm taipan 256 monocular and be well setup for around $1300. Catch a sale or 2 maybe under $1k.

Thanks to all for the advice. My FLIR Scout is only good to around 100 yards and it is probably time to upgrade.

Well, here are some inital photos taken by the Rattler. I am learning the focus and magnification aspect of the optic. Will post additional photos as I get used to it. This is the White Hot Mode and the "Fusion" Mode. There is a Black Hot Mode, and Red Hot Mode (which is basically White Hot, but red accents on the hotter portions).

The Tree is ~100-150 yds away (guestimate), the moo-moos are about 50-60 yds. The mailbox is about 60 yds away, and the transmission line is unknown, as I haven't laser range findered the distance. I am guestimating it at about 300 yds, I'll update when I laser it.

Well, here we go down the rabbit hole. Wish me well fellas.

My first purchase for real in the thermal/night vision game other than the Russian surplus one I had a long time ago.

Decided on this as a handheld monocular for now, and will start collecting all of the other things for the helmet and night vision as funds come available. I'm going to put a metaphorical envelope and when the envelope has enough money in it I'm going to make the next purchase on the list.

    Welcome....
I'm going to just tether it on a lanyard for now and play at the Undisclosed Location.

I'll have tons more questions as this evolves, but I can't go all in at once.

I think the jump will be once I get the night vision monocular because that will require the helmet and then all of the requirements to get that set up.

There is nothing wrong with the polymer bump helmets. They are cheap and work just fine.
Is it bad I'm already looking at IR lights for a truck I don't yet own, so I can use NV I haven't purchased?
    This is the way.

I got one of these Surefire lights for my rifle.
It does both visible and IR. It goes just fine with my DBAL I2. The white light is a little anemic at 350 lumens, but i can control both with a dual pressure switch.

Yeah, I'm the a-hole who spent $700 on a flashlight set up....

I use a monocular for scanning and retrieval. The monocular doesn’t need to be expensive to do those jobs. Mine is mid high level but my nephew has a $600 ATN that is plenty good for the job. I’ve been through 2 lesser scopes and sold them both and put more money in to get a really good one. I’d definitely hold out as long as possible to get the right scope. We should all get together one night and check out each other’s equipment. Dirty connotation deliberate.

The brown truck of happiness spread some joy. More of a report coming at some point.
