For population control, focus on shooting sows. They pump out 3 litters a year from 6 months old. Suppressors are a must…to get more.

You have to kill something like 60 or 70% of a population to keep it in check and at the current number because they reproduce so fast.

Check out the helicopter hunters in Texas. Not sure what it costs but looks like a hoot. Ted Nugent seems to have a good time with it.

The article is written in 2015. It does not mention that some land owners started to "protect" feral pigs from complete eradication in order to get money from hunters.

Everytime i’ve ever looked into it- it ends up being almost or more expensive than an out of state deer hunt.

I’ve been on paid deer and pig out of state hunts. Pig is usually about a third if not less. Of course there are several things that can close or widen the gap.

Unfortunately they do their begging to the state and local government. My friend that recently retired from his game warden job is who hooks me up in NC. Most farmers would run to him. He’d tell them there wasn’t enough resources for him to handle it but he kept a list of willing hunters. Very seldom any farmer hit the list. They don’t have as much of a problem as down south yet but it’s getting worse every year.

The more effective removal techniques involves trapping. Taking out whole Sounders in a bunch. The traps are 10, 20, 30y circular enclosures with feeders and multiple entrances / automatic gates. (Described in the story)

shooting them singles at a time is fun, but not effective with the high reproduction rate. And they are smart. They learn, and when shot, move out fast. They go nocturnal quick too.

then the discussion about shooting vs hunting. And leaving vs eating. Especially considering it’s an invasive species. And all that SOME folks do to spread them in some places or treat them like native game animals.

heres a little one we picked up in Georgia a while back. My late hunting partner on a good day! It spices up ML deer season. he was hunting hog with modern rifle while I was looking for deer. That one what about 325-350 or so. The shield was about 50lbs of grizzled super thick hide packed with mud

I just watched an outdoor show addressing this problem. Hunting is not doing the job and many states are moving to trapping.

If you watch any of the pig hunting videos, you can see how many there are and, even with semi auto rifles, they can only hit so many.

Who are you hunting with?

I have a friend who lives down there and he introduces us to farmers he knows. It’s tough getting in because we aren’t from there. We’ve been searching out lease possibilities. Ideally a couple or three in the 50-75 acres each would be perfect. There are pigs but it’s real hit or miss. Dogs are very abundant

Seems reasonable, it’s got to be an expensive operation to keep running. I would spend 2k per hour to shoot hogs from a helicopter before I went to Disney or on a Caribbean cruise.
