I see there has been a of discussion about carrying a pistol cocked and locked. Lots of first timers in MD with WC for the first time. Gun Digest has a good article discussing it.

I've never understood those who were nervous about a 1911 or other SA pistol being carried (or set aside for home defense) in condition one. They are designed for that, with the safety engaged it is no more dangerous than any other gun carried ready to go, and it is so much faster than carrying one any other way. Sure it looks a little more intimidating, and if it really bothers you, then carry a DA/SA, DAO or striker fired pistol (or maybe not the striker since they are essentially halfway between SA and DA and most don't have a manual safety, until I got over it about 10 years ago I found that far more intimidating than a SA pistol with the safety engaged). As the article says, never carry in condition 3. It just takes too long to get your defensive gun into play, and those moments could be the difference between life or death. Of course, that is assuming the best case scenario and you can charge your pistol, what if you need your off-hand to physically engage an attacker at less-than arms length?

A pistol carried for self defense in condition 3 is basically a rock.

    I prefer locked and cocked.

While I realize you're being funny, there are a number of people on this forum who would seemingly be better off with a DAO or decocker-equipped pistol so they could carry hammer down without the apparent drama of manually lowering the hammer.

My comfort with carrying in condition 1 would probably revolve around the presence of a firing pin safety.

See, this has been hashed to death in the Open and Concealed Carry Thread. There's been no mention in The Depot.

Let's beat it to death here.
