Shot Federal punch .22LR today, was supprised.

I bought a box of Federal .22LR Punch ammo today just to see what it does. I decided to just throw a round in my 10/22 with the bolt lock on and launch it through my Dead Air Mask at my bullet trap in the garage. I didn't put any ear protectors on as it is rated at 1070 (same as Standard Velocity which my Mask quiets down to almost nothing). However, when I touched it off, it sounded like a unsuppressed standard velocity round.

Tried another and got the same. I decided I would stop experimenting and see if anyone has any idea what is going on. Just to make sure I wasn't going nuts, I fired off a mag full of CCI SV and didn't make much more noise than the clang of the steel backstop.

It's innovation/ gimmick is light , flat nose bullet driven fast , to maximize penetration . And thus be heavily advertised as ultimate Defensive .22lr .

Reputable testing shows that it does
Ie ; Penetration about an inch more than conventional 40gr RN .22lr .

Good on them for being innovative ; and actually being an improvement. But that evokes two questions:

Is that enough Difference to Make a Difference ?

Is that enough to change the categorizing of .22lr as a Defensive Arm ?

Several years ago, we had a labrador sized dog roaming the neighborhood. It seemed to be a stray and was extremely aggressive. Being somewhat more concerned about the animal than fine point legality, I kept my Mossy 500 loaded with 00. I figured that if I had to shoot, I didn't plan to shoot twice, especially in a neighborhood.

(It was a dumb plan but I had newborn and I was sleep deprived. I'm eternally grateful that I never had to test this theory. I'd probably still be in jail.)

That said, something like this MIGHT make a 10/22 viable against such a target, especially at close range. Ammo companies are great at making us wonder such things. Sells a lot of ammo.

It's the first time I have seen .22 ammo that says what length barrel the velocity was obtained right on the box.

Not really . With the lower SD and BC it will loose velocity faster .

Wish I had read this thread first. Yes, sounds like high velocity out of my sparrow mounted Savage mk ll. Stingers are cheaper and I have them already. Bummer.
