Years ago, I inherited a Shiloh Sharps Model 1874 in .45-70. It’s an insanely beautiful rifle that appears unfired, but the rifle does not appear to have a reticle in the front sight, it’s just an open hole (it has a rear peep sight). Is there a ‘best reticle’ I should install if I do want to try my hand at shooting it?

I also have toyed with the idea of parting with the rifle, so would it even be worth it in the even the prospective new owner wants to install a sight that they like?

    (Yes, I know…pics coming soon…)

Assuming it's a globe front sight you can get an assortment of inserts fairly cheap from multiple sources, Buffalo Arms is one.

If you decide to sell let me know I may be interested depending on which rifle it is.

What Angie said! Plenty of options for insert selection. My eyes prefer the skinny post!

As promised: I am totally confused on what mode this could be: Long Range Express? Creedmore (but it has a cheek rest), Sporter?

Nice rifle, possibly a Long Range Express with a bunch of options. You could try emailing Shiloh Sharps with a serial number and see if they can tell you what model and options.

This is 100% a go. They will let you know all about it. Great looking half-round you have there!

Resurrecting this thread, I contacted Shiloh about my rifle. Waiting on their response. Does anybody know how long they may take to respond?

I have been thinking about selling it, but it’s such a beautiful rifle.

My Shiloh is on the bottom on this pic, a 1982ish 1874 "Old Reliable" Infantry built in NY; which in this config is a rare one to find. Handles and shoots amazing. My Pedersoli above uses inserts like yours. Just use whatever is best suited for the distance and target you are aiming to hit, it's that simple. Involves math, a steady hand, and patience...but these sights are ace when you do that. Me myself?...I prefer the old military irons on the 74 Infantry; I'm not shooting long distance.

Still looks to me like a Long Range Express with a lot of the option boxes checked, it is a beautiful rifle. I would have to think long and hard about selling it but if you do let me know please.

Yeah selling would be the last thing on my mind! That’s a wonderful rifle and really a unique chance to get you into a great sport. Basically starting your racing career with a Ferrari.

Shiloh is slow to do much in my experience.
