I am fairly new to firearms and have never sold a long gun face to face before, so I am a bit unaware of certain things that might be needed for legal reasons. Anybody that has any experience with this, what should I look out for and what should I be aware of?

First make double sure the gun isn't regulated. When you do the sale if anything seems off or odd about the other person, leave. Get a bill of sale that includes the other person's personal info including DL number.

I forgot to mention the most important fact.

Make sure the buyer pays you with cash or money order, do not take IOUs ;)

You can run a criminal check via the net for free by googling Maryland Judiciary Case Search. It only gives you Maryland returns, but it is a very good system. Be sure to cross check the name and date of birth or other identifying numbers, addresses, etc. especially if it is a common name.

How can I be sure they are not prohibited?

You don't need to be sure. You only need to: Have no reason to believe that they are prohibited.
If something doesn't feel right, trust your gut and pass, but you don't have to do a background check.

Ask him/her if they ever been arrested/convicted...

Just have them sign a statement on the Bill of Sale stating "I am not prohibited by state or federal law from owning a firearm."

They are on the hook then. Not you.

If they won't sign a bill of sale, then only do the transfer through an FFL.
