The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Prince George's Department of Parks and Recreation, Natural & Historical Resources Division, Park Ranger Unit is seeking a Seasonal Intermittent Park Ranger to assist with our Deer Management Program.
This position requires working between dusk until dawn during the times wherein deer management activities take place (February and March). Wildlife/natural resource work will occur as needed. General work hours will vary and include weekdays, at least one weekend day, some evenings and possible holidays. Weekly work schedule will be 20 +/- hours per week not to exceed 30 hours. Possible 40-hour work weeks in February and March. Incumbent will be working from January until end of March with possible extension as needed.
This position pays at a rate of $15.00 to $17.00 per hour dependent on experience and qualifications.
Examples of Important Duties
Preferred Qualifications:
The preferred candidate will have hunting experience and be comfortable handling/field dressing deer carcasses. Related education experience in wildlife management, science related background, previous park ranger work or park-related experience is preferred.
Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver's license. Driver's licenses must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required of the position.
A complete background investigation will be completed prior to hire.
This position does not provide benefits.

- Assist Park Rangers in conducting deer population surveys on park land.
- Build and maintain deer exclosures on park land; gather and analyze data from exclosures.
- Maintain sign-in kiosks at recreational hunting sites, as well as conduct routine patrols and enforce hunting regulations on park land.
- Assist in the preparation and implementation of a Park Police-based Sharpshooting Program in February and March.
- Create maps using GIS-based software.
- Assist with nuisance wildlife management.
- Data entry, analysis and reporting on deer population studies.
- Ability to safely use chainsaws, brush mowers, and hand tools.
- Event support and other duties as assigned.
- College degree in appropriate field such as education, natural resource management, environmental science, wildlife management, or related field
- Experience hunting for wild game such as deer.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
- This position requires heavy lifting.
- Some knowledge in wildlife or natural resources management.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings/nights and weekends/weekdays
- Required to work from 2:00 pm to 2:00 am in February and March 2023
- Organizational skills and basic computer skills (MS Word, Excel)
- Exposure to inclement winter weather
- Basic knife handling skills and comfortable around firearms.
- Ability to read a map and create maps using GIS-based software is preferred.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
