THIS IS NO TIME TO LAY DOWN.

Unfortunately, complaining on a thread won't result in action. If you have the ability to debate and render your opinion on a thread or share your opinion then please share it to people that can speak for you. We are not saying don't comment. We are just saying if you can comment, then share your comments with your representatives, just not on here, facebook or any other social media platform.

As most of you have probably heard, the new SB1 bill will substantially limit the wear and carry of a firearm for those who have handgun permits in the State of Maryland. This bill directly prohibits any permit holder from wearing their firearm in areas of and within 100 feet from a "public accommodation". This includes anywhere where the public has access to including hotels, restaurants, big box stores, public accessible parking areas, any place that sells an alcoholic beverage (including buying it and leaving, as in a 6 pack of beer), all retail establishments, movie theaters, etc. It also prohibits the carrying of a firearm onto any private property unless the property owner specifically authorizes the person prior to carrying onto the property.

The penalty for violation is up to 1 year in jail.

This law as proposed will gut the current wear and carry permit entirely rendering it essentially useless. Moreover, this law in it's current form also applies to private detectives, security officers, and special police officers.

USTASC has already submitted a FOIA request to the Maryland State Police to determine the statistics (if kept) about the number of times a person with a carry permit has committed a crime of violence while carrying a firearm and carry permit for the last 10 years. Moreover, we have also requested the number of times that a person with a carry permit has lawfully used their firearm in self defense.

    What do to about this?

First and foremost, you should write your representatives NOW. This law is currently in committee. To find who to write, go here: https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/Members/District, click on LOOKUP at the top selection and enter in your address.

Second you should contact your local sheriff's office and make your feelings known by going to their website and contacting them directly from the contact form. Remember that your sheriff is also an elected official and can make an appearance in this matter.

Lastly you can submit public testimony on this issue 2 days prior to the bill going to the hearing (FEB 5 @ 8PM) at https://mgaleg.maryland.gov/mgawebsite/MyMGATracking/WitnessSignup. Remember that if you attend in person or by zoom meeting you must remain respectful and professional as you are representing all of us. You can also submit written testimony this way.

ADD THIS DATE TO YOUR CALENDAR IF YOU WANT TO SIGN UP TO TESTIFY.
