Savage model 1917

I picked up this Savage model 1917 from another member last year. It's a interesting little gun. It's chambered in one of my favorite cartridges 32ACP. The trigger on its a little stiff but all in all its a nice little shooter.

I've got a Savage 1917 also. Cool guns and a part of my early semiauto pistol collection. But when you put the Savage side by side with a Colt 1903 in .32ACP......it is very clear to see who got asked to go to the prom.
I would love to pick up one of these Savages in .45ACP! Not many out there.

I'm working on a early semiauto pistol collection myself. Top of my want list is a 1903. Today I just filled out some paperwork on a colt vest pocket dated 1917.

If you don't already have it already, I recommend picking up a copy of the Bailey Brower... book on Savage pistols. Some interesting chit. Not a cheap book but... There is additional info online about variants by SN's.

Personally, I prefer the 1907's over the 1917's. I like those lines better and they work for me. I believe there are about 17 variants of the 1907 and IDK about the 1917 but reckon a lot less.

And I'm with you on the 32's:

and other advertisements that Savage put out marketing to females, and I guess husbands too.
That was 100 + years ago.

32 ACP was a very popular round for a long while.

Savage also made .380's but I've focused on 32's.

I've also attempted to get a Colt 1905 collection of the variants which I believe are 4, maybe 5 variants.
These are sweet shooters.

I think there is a niche for older/disabled/normal/other folks for the 32 ACP and also the 38 S&W. Agreed not maximum for HD but workable for a lot of folks.

The question is with a 100 YO firearm is it reliable?

That's probably what these guys thought too before the slide failures...
I had a 3rd one with a cracked slide but can't find the pics...

Well then cash in the kid's college bonds because there are not 1 or 2 but 3 Savage .45 US Army Trials pistols coming up to auction in the next 2-3 weeks from Poulin, RIA and Morphy! Like the US Trials 1900 Lugers I have to think that the holsters for these are harder to find than the pistols.

Here is an original .45 trial pistol with it's issued holster. A very old gentleman had this listed a number of years ago and was asking 30K for the rig. I'm basing the owners age on the hands shown holding the pistol while taking the pictures. Holsters are more rare than the pistols.
