Saw some photos from a Jim Batson dirk class a friend had posted over on bladesmith's forum, and had to try one. Being lazy I turned the bolster on the lathe first, and turned in the transition to the tang to forge later. Started with 1/2" round.

You're quite talented. That looks really good. What steel did you use? What size is it? The pattern on the handle is just plain beautiful and gives it a lot of unique character which is something that always attracts me to knives.

The grain pattern on it looks awesome although I know nothing about 1045...is it essentially a lower carbon version of 1075? Middish 50 hardness with tough-as-nails characteristics?
