Neighbor inherited a 38 S&W Special CTG & asked me to ID the model #. Unable to locate a model number and posted the question to the gunValue boards. Learned that model #’s were not used by S&W untill 1958.

Interesting that these guns do not have a "38/44" mark on them, or any other diagnostic mark for the lay person to reference.

Check out the following thread, very educational (at least to me) from a very knowledgeable person. His very interesting BIO is at the end of the thread.

Does the serial number start with an S or an N? It's the N-size frame 38 special, as opposed to the smaller K frame of the Model 10, 14, 15, etc. The N frame is used on the 27 and 28 .357, the .41 and .44 magnums. A beast but easy on the recoil and can do the job.
