I am restoring a 1909 Model 8 that was in desperate need of a new forend and buttstock. I got a beautiful walnut set from an outfit out of NC and have the forend nearly finished up. The rifle was missing the escutcheon that the takedown screw sits in, so I had to fashion a new one (I used a heavy-duty brass bearing sleeve that I scored to the proper height and then shaped it down using various sanding medium and finished to a high polish with tripoli and a dremmel felt wheel.) I assume that the factory original was likely built so that it had a gripping surface to help keep it in place, but my replacement has no such features. It's a snug fit, and I was wondering if I should glue it in (and if so, with what glue?) or if it would likely stay in place and be secure by finishing over it with tru-oil as I continue to sand and oil the forend to fill in the grain and produce a high gloss finish?

    Thoughts?

I can't help with your question but I do have a soft spot for Model 8/81s.
Here is a pic of my 1922 and 1949, both in .35 Rem.

.35 Rem for mine as well. It was factory repaired in Dec '46 according to the XRR3 stamp on the barrel shoulder. I was able to find the Marbles tang sight for it (there was a grime mark where it had clearly been on and then taken off at some point) and a Marbles flip-down rear sight to go with it as the original sight was all bunged up on mine. I'll post pictures in the C&R forum when it's done.
