I am restoring a 1909 Model 8 that was in desperate need of a new forend and buttstock. I got a beautiful walnut set from an outfit out of NC and have the forend nearly finished up. The rifle was missing the escutcheon that the takedown screw sits in, so I had to fashion a new one (I used a heavy-duty brass bearing sleeve that I scored to the proper height and then shaped it down using various sanding medium and finished to a high polish with tripoli and a dremmel felt wheel.) I assume that the factory original was likely built so that it had a gripping surface to help keep it in place, but my replacement has no such features. It's a snug fit, and I was wondering if I should glue it in (and if so, with what glue?) or if it would likely stay in place and be secure by finishing over it with tru-oil as I continue to sand and oil the forend to fill in the grain and produce a high gloss finish?
