I know it all comes down to personal preference, but I’m curious what the general consensus is on whether it not you cap the cost of your carry weapon. Some people cite not wanting to potential lose their guns to the evidence locker after a self defense event.

For me, I’m indifferent to cost. I don’t want to limit myself from carrying a great weapon (to me) just because I’m worried I might lose that $1,500. On the other hand, I’d like to carry the weapon I feel most confident and comfortable with.

    Thanks for your thoughts!

Yeah-- "comfort and confidence" generally comes with use and training. I'd say you can get really comfortable and confident with a firearm for self defense, that is reliable and will eat just about ant SD round you want to run through for a crap-ton less than $1500... a metric crap-ton less. $500 will get someone well in those parameters of performance.

My rule of thumb is I don't carry anything I can't stand to lose. Example would be my fathers service revolver. I would regret losing that if it happened.

Carry gun is a tool, tools are of different quality and price. Carry gun is not a collector piece.

Losing the gun is likely to be the tip of the iceberg in costs associated with defensive UOF. I don't carry collector guns that are not easily replaced but if I really liked a pricy gun and shot it better than what I currently use, I'd carry the more expensive gun and not lose sleep over the cost.

True, definitely not trying to say that $500 guns can’t be perfect for carry. And the comfort/confidence I was referring to was more of a “I picked this up and it felt amazing, and when I shot it, it was as if heavens gates opened up.” Maybe that doesn’t happen much, could just be my own ignorance.

I haven’t spent $500 on any single piece W&C or no.

Nor do I feel as though I’ve compromised on reliably or ability to get it done based on my limited skill level.

I don’t spend more than $20 on a bottle of booze or wine either so…

I have a Glock with a dot. I'm not worried about cost. What is your life and the lives of your loved one's worth? I carry a Glock because I can shoot them well(mostly).

All guns are tools. It's just that some are prettier than others.

My gx4 was 300 and I bought that instead of something expensive because it got great reviews and, while I wasn't worried about it ending up in an evidence locker, I knew it would get used and abused. The slide shows holster wear. Whatever. It's a tool.

So... are you sayin' you got a "pretty tool" their sailor -- or just a run o' the mill drill? :D

I have guns I wouldn't carry because they're not replaceable for any number of reasons.

My original choice for EDC was a CZ P01, as it was very reliable, with a decocker so a safety wasn't added to the manual of arms, and it's very ergonomically satisfying. After I while I chose to carry a CZZ Rami, as it's essentially the same pistol, but shorter, narrower and lighter.

As the Rami has been discontinued, and being aware of Grandpa's Law - "If you find something you like a lot, buy two, because it'll be discontinued," I now have an extra in case my primary is seized and turned onto a manhole cover. (Glad I got them before the prices got stupid).

Some of the CCW insurers will provide funds to replace your pistol if John Law decides to keep it, if that's an issue.
