I hope the bad guy can get connected to that death somehow, though I wouldn't trust a DC jury to do the right thing.

Without the details, I can only picture the officer reaching blindly into that storm drain and connecting with the pistol while it was pointed right at him, and he got his thumb on the trigger trying to pick it up. Ugh.

So how could this have been prevented? Flashlight and a handheld mirror could have helped. Putting phone in the drain to take a picture with flash on to get an idea of angle. Those are my ideas.

Shame that these things didn't happen in the moment.

Calling DPW and entering from a manhole cover would have been safer.

Damn. 25 year veteran officer. Even after all his experience, there's always going to be something maliciously and fatally lurking out there, that isn't anticipated. :sad20:

Awful situation. Talked to some of my MPD buddies last night, he was a good guy and a great cop. Rest in peace friend.

Very sad to hear this. RIP.

Meanwhile, officers headed back to the storm drain where the man dumped the gun. As they were attempting to retrieve the firearm, it went off, hitting an officer, now identified as investigator Wayne David, in the upper body.

It must have missed his vest by being a straight up vertical shot (through the shoulder or arm pits) as he was leaning over and reaching down?

    Just awful. Prayers to family.
