I bought a Savage Mark II as a pest gun for raccoons and just generally “because.”

I wasted a lot of money trying make a setup for a flashlight and finally ended up with a cheap $10 forty five degree offset, a $10 Home Depot flashlight and some zip ties. I bought a couple flash light mounts but it would require me to raise the red dot height which I didn’t want to do since any shot would be within 25 yds.

However, I do have a question. What is the effectiveness of CCI “quiet” rounds? Are these more suited for bird hunting? At 710 FPS I can probably just buy a 22 cal air gun.

Also anyone know the decibel or real world difference of the Quiet 710 FPS vs a regular subsonic 1050 FPS?

Standard .22s are pretty dang quiet out of that rifle when suppressed.

I have taken a few coons but I do it with a .25 air rifle and a 47 gn slug at 875 FPS CCI quiet, 710 FPS, probably won't be going 710 out of your rifle so you wont be getting 44 FPE. I would not use CCI quiet on a Coon sized animal. The 45 gn, 910 FPS suppressor ammo would be a better choice.

Quiets are like a pellet gun out of that rifle.
I’ve taken a ground hog at about 40 yards, but I got him right through the brain stem. Rifle is a tack driver (FV-SR)

They make segmented quiets for hunting. I have killed many a small critter with std quiets, but since I shoot suppressed, I actually prefer CCI Suppressor as it is far more accurate and has a bit more velocity (835fps iirc).

CCI Quiets are hollywood quiet out of a suppressed rifle. Click, thwack is all I hear. The report gets louder the more you increase velocity and std velocity are noticeable louder, though still hearing safe when shooting suppressed. I have tested all of the sub ammo out there at one point or another.

I shoot std velocity CCI's suppressed out of my 15-22 to get reliable cycling in a semi auto, though the newer mid range subs (suppressor and semis at 835fps) will probably work fine too, just haven't tested them in the 15-22 yet.

Oops, stand corrected, CCI Suppressor is 970fps, the semi auto quiets are 835. Here is some data I got using a sound meter app on my phone. I see a lot of variation and inconsistency in std quiet ammo, far less with the slightly higher velocity CCI ammo.

I too shoot a couple of MKII's, one suppressed 16" (fvsr) and one bull barrel 20" that is still neighborhood quiet with quiet ammo even unsuppressed.

this is as quiet as it gets without a suppressor. Terminal ballistics not so good, but plinking in the backyard and no noise.

I frequently use “quiet” low velocity .22 CBs. 30 grain, 720 FPS.

I unfortunately can confirm they will go through a piece of vinyl siding, 1/2” thick T-11, travel 12 feet, penetrate another 1/2” piece of T11, then exit another piece of vinyl siding. Through and through my old shed....

The report is very quiet, like my custom Macari Tarantula R9 .22 spring gun.

I have the same gun and it is a tack driver. My suppressor doesn't like the CCI-quiet both for accuracy and they are noisier. I switched mostly to Eley or Federal. Love the Eley.

Quiet is like firing off a primer with my 10/22 Dead Air Mask combo. Something about it not making enough gas volume makes it noisy. Standard Velocity CCI are almost as quiet as Suppressor CCI.

I gotta get this sighted in today. I’ve been up since 3:00AM fighting off this raccoon again with a stick.

I fell asleep early on accident and didn’t get the coop locked up. I got awakened by the sound of the birds going crazy and flipped on the flood lights and ran outside with a pole. Found one of the girls limping around dazed and got her back in the coop and checked on the rest. 1 missing.

An hour later I hear all the commotion again and grab my pole and a flashlight and do it all over again. The missing chicken must have been hiding in the trees and the coon flushed it out. I saw his eyes glowing in the corner of the yard and chased it off.

The quiets? Don't use them unless its a squirrel. Get their quiet segmented rounds. Those are significantly more effective. I've shot three ground hogs with quiets. The only one that I killed for sure, I hit with 6 rounds.

With the quiet segmented, so far none have made it back to their burrow. That makes 4. One was killed with a single round. Two probably would have died from the first round, but I hit them with a second one anyway because it was obvious they still had some life left in them. The other one certainly needed two, but I hit him with three.

My usual go to are CCI 45gr LHP suppressor rounds. I am 5 for 5 with them. Most I hit a second time (I think 3 of the 5), probably none of them needed it, but unless its very obvious to me the ground hog is dead, it just doesn't know it yet, I hit them a second time.

I am using up the last of my Winchester 42gr LHP subs which had been my go to for most of COVID, but then they stopped making/importing them and I think I have a box and a half left. I couldn't find the CCIs for a long time, then I scored on 6 boxes of the CCI, so switching back probably after this ground hog season.

Anyway, I am around 7 for 10 (might be 8 for 11?) with the Winchester. In one case I know the ground hog didn't die as I saw it, 98% sure the same one, less than a week later and then DID kill it. The other two, don't know. New ground hogs showed up suspiciously soon, maybe they had healed up. I tend not to do full postmortems on the suckers. All of them sure acted like they'd gotten hit. And in all three cases, I hit them, and then waited to see if they were going to die, and I should have hit them another time right away. Which is now my general policy. The CCIs were, I am pretty sure 2 were single shot kills, the other 3 I hit a 2nd time to be sure, but might have died from 1 hit. The Winchester 3 made it away with one hit, two died from one hit. 3 or 4 I hit twice and they died. One I hit three times and it died. One was like FU nam and I put 9 rounds down range as it was on the run and hit it 3 or 4 times (hit it once, and stupidly waited two or three seconds to see if it would death flop, and it flopped, and immediately ran for its hole as I was chucking lead after it. It did not make it).

CCI Segmented subs I'd bet are probably THE best for something like a racoon or ground hog. However, in my case I am just too nervous to shoot them through my suppressor. So not nearly so quiet. And I've found they aren't particularly accurate out of my 10/22. The Quiet segmented I can group in 1" at 30yds and 2" at 50yds. Win 42s are about the same. CCI 45 subs are about 1/2" at 30 and 1" at 50. WIth my Element 2 on my 10/22 the Wins tighten to about 1 3/4" at 50 and the CCI subs to about 3/4" at 50yds.

CCI segmented subs are more like 1.5" at 30 and 3" at 50. Most of my shots on ground hogs are from 25-50yds. A lot are right at 30, because that's where my neighbor's shed is from my son's window (yes, she wants me shooting them and has told me as much) (her house is about 100yds from mine and my house is setup near the edge of my property in the crook of the L that is my property). A lot of ground hogs like to burrow under there. So 2-3 times a season, it is crack my son's window, pop the ground hog. Go out, retrieve with a small shovel, fill the gravel back under the corner of her shed, go toss the ground hog in my woods.

Most of the others are my side yard or the occasional cheeky idiot that basically climbs up my back patio that usually get drilled from about 7yds through the head by cracking my patio door.

A suggestion on your setup, get an inexpensive streamlight or similar and mount it far out there. Not sure if you've actually tried that setup yet, but I'd imagine you are going to have a BIG shadow cast with the position of that flashlight. It doesn't need to be some massively powerful light. I have a streamlight Protac 1L on my ARs in rings. 275lm is not fantastic, but for 20-30yds it would work fine for a racoon. Or in the house distances (which I care about more in this case).
