Ok, I can only get one Garand (its a reward for completing the Marine Corps Marathon, which i havent done yet, but am not sure i'll have much to choose from if i wait until Oct to buy a CMP Garand) so I have to make it count, but am I really getting value out of the SGS over the SG.

I will not be shooting this often, and certainly not in matches. I would venture a guess that one case of ammo would last me a long time.

I don't see a whole lot of collector value in Garands (there are millions of them), and am more getting this as it seems like a great gun to have and use occasionally.

    So

Depends, do you want a like "new" M1, or an M1 with character.

Personally I like the wear and patina on mine. New laminate stocks my look pretty, but my old "experienced" stock sure feels good.

Many, even most SGs are being shipped with new replacement stocks made of birch. The SGS will have a new walnut stock. Many of the birch stocks are an odd "pumpkin orange" color, while the walnut is really beautiful. You can put a sticky note on your SG order and ask for a USGI stock, but chances are you'll get new birch.

It's always best if you can pick one out in person, or get someone else to pick it for you. A hand-picked Field Grade might be your best bet.

If you can get to the South Store in three months, it sounds like you have a great opportunity. Do some research so you're prepared to scrutinize the choices, and consider picking out a really nice Field Grade with a GI stock.

You can pick your rifle out at the store, and have them ship it, instead of taking it with you. Not only might that be more convenient, but you don't have to pay sales tax, just the $24.99 shipping.

You do realize that Garands aren't being banned, right? There isn't really a rush.
