I'm thinking I need a new SHTF rifle. I was thinking of an AR in 7.62 or 5.45 since the surplus is still pretty cheap. I'm thinking an AR platform because I'm familiar with it. Does anyone have any recommendations, good models, ones to stay away from. Would probably go with a flattop upper with A2 front sight.

I'm not against an AK model either, my problem is I'm pretty ignorant of them and from what it seems there are some to stay away from or it can be a 50/50 chance on the quality of what you get.

I would be willing to pay a little more for something reliable, I don't want to go cheap and have to constantly screw with it to get it reliable.

in those caliblers, AKs will be a) more reliable, b) cheaper to build/buy.

Arsenal is top of the AK business nowadays, I'm sure some more knowledgeable guys will chime in.

Why not an AR in 5.56/223? Ammo is plentiful, reloading for it is easy, and there are so many variations you can build your own easily (with optics, my first build cost me $775).

I'd think a real shtf gun would be a 18" .308 bolt gun. Pretty innocuous. good for defense if you really had to, and effective enough to take most game you're going to encounter should anything ever happen. Lord knows we aint gunna be fire fighting our way outta things in this country. We're more likely to starve to death.

You're probably better off keeping what you already have and putting the money into an emergency food supply and other necessities needed in the event of a disaster or extended power outage etc.

Most folks on here are already armed to the teeth. :innocent0 ;)

The internet connection where I am at is sketchy at best so I cannot easily reply to everyone.

After reading the replies I think I am going to take everyones advice. I will stick with the AR that I already have and just stock up on ammo and spare parts. I have a ton of mags so that's not a problem.

I have a Remington 788 in .308 with an 18in barrel and it is a great shooting gun.

I would like to pick up a good AK and the Arsenals seem to get good reviews so maybe I will look into one when I get back home. But, I think after considering these replies and some comments in other threads on this forum I would be doing better for myself to improve what I already have. Good bugout bags, food sources and accesories such as mag pouches and spare parts.

Thanks for all the great replies!!!!

I wouldnt want to protect me or mine with a bolt gun given other options out there.
