Bought an old 1917 that had been reworked into Fitz configuration, but the original gunsmith didn't bob the hammer.
I posted in the "Gunsmith" area, got 130+ views, but only one response, referencing a gunsmith in AZ. I'd really prefer someone close to home, if any of y'all know of one.

So, what are you looking to do? Bob the hammer or redoing the trigger guard?

If the former, call Scott's Gunsmithing. Sharkey has done a lot of hammer bobbing jobs. He also does a fair amount of work on old Colts. Do be aware the shop is on summer hours ....only open Weds - Fri 10am to 6 pm, Sat 9am to 5 pm.

My plan is to get the hammer bobbed. Presumably the gunsmith will have to strip the pistol, at which time the guts can be examined for potential problems; though the action seems fine to me, one never knows what lurks within a 100 year old pistol.

I like the parkerised finish, the open trigger guard, and the blunt brutality that the pistol embodies. The original Fitzgerald design deliberately bobbed the hammer; the purpose of this gun is not target shooting, it's to get into action first and strike with sufficient force to stop a threat. 45acp would seem to fill the bill, and moon- or half-moon clips are the 1917 equivalent of speed loaders.

Thanks for the referrals; Scott's seems like an obvious choice, given my location.

Pretty sure any actual gunsmith would have no problem bobbing the hammer. May even be able to tackle the your self with a little research. Not aware of any other modifications necessary to compensate for the reduced mass of the hammer but again I don't know. I'm currently fumbling with the internals on 3 police positive revolvers and its pretty nerve racking. If your having or develop a timing issues you really want someone who knows colts.

    Not in Maryland
I would recommend Hafer’s in Hagerstown they have a gunsmith and machinist on staff. I would trust them with any gunsmithing project.

Answer #1 ‐ Any moderately competent armorer can Bob a hammer spur. ( Unless springs have been major lightened , to where it was barely igniting already , the reduced mass is negligible. )

Answer #2 ‐ New Service specialists are literally a dying breed , and few are left .

Scott's it is; just spoke with them, and I'm taking it in tomorrow, as I have a vet appt for my dog in that neck of the woods. Two birds, one trip.
