    Alrighty,
So I had an opportunity to pick up a Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 mag at a very good price. I took that opportunity, and it's on the way. Naturally, I need a levergun in .44 to keep it company, amirite? So, I don't necessarily want an all "tactical" levergun, but maybe something a little more than traditional is cool.

So, I'm really looking at the S&W 1854 with the Walnut furniture. I figure that finish-wise, it's clearly the winner being stainless with S&W Armornite (aka Nitride). I also don't see any bad reviews. I also like the threaded barrel in the event I get a .44 can.

    Other contenders are....

    Rossi. Nothing fancy, inexpensive.

Henry Big Boy X. Was never really on my radar until more recently. The weird tube-loading always made me cringe, but I've seen some that are pretty nice.

Chiappa Alaskan. Absolutely gorgeous. Wish they were threaded, but I can live with it. The takedown is cool, although I'd never use it. $$$

Chiappa Trapper with 16" octagonal barrel. Just freakin' gorgeous, but seem to be unobtainium.

The Citadel levtac seems pretty cool, but I've seen some not-so-good reviews in 'em so I'm a little leary.

I do like the "extra strength" (be it real or perceived) of the "closed" actions of the Henry and the S&W. The side eject also makes it nice for adding an optic if I go that direction.

    Thoughts?

I have a Marlin 1894 in 44 Mag and really like it, don't know how easy the new ones are to find? I really like the looks of the Henrys and I think they are pretty solid guns. If I was looking now I'd probably lean toward the Henry.

    Where they send me.
If you have one with the crossbolt safety and want to keep it on fire you can get an o-ring which fits nicely into the groove on it to make it pretty much inert. Can be removed down the road if desired.

Be advised that the bore diameter for a 44m rifle varies a bit from a 44m pistol so not all ammo may be accurate in both of them if that is your ask, may take some testing to find the happy medium. I know it sounds odd, but the SAAMI specs do differ a little between the platforms.

    The S&W 1854
    The Big boy X
    The Marlin 1894

If you are going to upgrade the iron sights, go with Skinner's. All of the above guns are outstanding choices. My 1854 is the stainless model and it shoots very well. If you want an optic / red dot that maybe the best bet. The Marlin is pure cowboy fun !

One of the coolest things ever was going to see Joe at the old Corsica Coatings and shooting his suppressed .44 rifle.

It was a "poof" "thwack" with each shot.

The Henry X Big boy,, then contact Henry and get the wood furniture set and you have a great threaded barrel "traditional" Lever gun.

    ^^ That's a nice combination, there.

If you do with the Henry, then I would get the model with the side-loader option. Never hurts to have versatility.

The Rossi 92 is a no-frills, affordable rifle that works. I like 'em.

You can get any rifle's barrel threaded by any competent gunsmith, BTW.

Oh, I LIKE that. Problem is, after adding the wood, it would probably end up costing more than the S&W. Any thoughts on the S&W vs. Henry?
