So, I'm heading over to Winchester tomorrow for the N-SSA Recruitment Skirmish. Will probably take the plunge and join as an individual for up to 1 year before joining a team.

Anyone else on the forum going?

At some point I'll see you down there. I had posted that I was moving Richlands and asked about teams in the area. Got many very nice responses and I'll join when I get down there. Didn't want to join a team up here because I knew I was going to leave the state. Looks like a lot of fun!

Ah, don't talk to them. Talk to us at McGregor's Battery.

Seriously, I've been a Skirmisher for 45 years. It's a good sport...and good people. More of an extended family than anything else. Let me know if you need pointers.

I did about six years back in the late 60’s/early 70’s. 67th NY in the old Metropolitan Region. Lots of us still used original weapons and even some original gear.
It’s a great sport…lottsa fun…nice folks…every now and then I think about jumping back in…now retired and living in Florida…not a lot of NY outfits around here, though.

I’ve been a member of the NSSA for 22 years. Sadly I haven’t returned to shoot since they shut down during Covid. Since Covid my responsibilities at work have gone up, and I just don’t have the free time anymore. Hopefully, I’ll get back into it soon!
Great organization, great atmosphere. Some team members are like family to me.

Anyone know if there are N-SSA teams that practice at the AGC range? Also, any Union teams in MD (not that I care much about that aspect when joining a team, but just curious)? Hard to figure that out from the regional websites.

Anyway, I'm shooting as a guest with the 48th Virginia at the upcoming Nationals. Looking forward to meeting folks on this thread.

Years ago, Marriottsville Muzzle Loaders had a Confederate Unit that shot at AGC. They also used to have a bivouac weekend where they camped and shot for like three days. I haven't been a member since @2006 so I don't know if it is still active.

I'm going to go up next Sunday morning to shoot the MM monthly match at AGC. Hopefully I'll meet some N-SSA members there. Thanks John.

They used to have a skirmish every year at the AGC, until maybe 20 years ago. They'd have a special event in which the winning skirmish team competed against a team of Marines shooting M14s, single loaded.

Probably more like 25 years ago. Lol. I remember them talking about it when I joined. I did see them shoot against the Virginia state police pistol team, at least that’s who I think it was. The NSSA won that one easily. That was probably the 1st or 2nd year I was a member.

I guess I'm showing my age as I was there for 30 years. :o

As I recall, the Marines would clear the pigeon board in nothing flat, but the skirmishers would always beat them on the stake shoot. Those lumbering minie balls would tear up the wood much better than the little .30 FMJs ever could.

There's a massive overlap of regions. The Greater National Capital area has the Potomac, Chesapeake, Allegheny, and parts of the Central Virginia and Mid-Atlantic Regions. And teams...my own has members in PA, MD, VA, WV, and NC.

You should be able to find a team that suits you. Some are more or less active, some are stronger with one arm or another.

Well, I really enjoyed the Nationals this past weekend. Shot the Carbine and Musket team events with the 48th Virginia, and will be joining their team. While I'm starting on the B team relay, and wasn't that happy with my initial shooting, we did manage to get a second place medal in musket. I'll take that for my first Skirmish. Already looking forward to the Halloween Skirmish at the Fort in a couple of weeks. Going to add smoothbore to my events too.

Glad you had a good time. BP shooting en masse is always lots of fun.

WOW, second place for your first time? That's great. If you join, along with all the great skirmish events, you have a campsite and the privilege of practice shooting at the Fort anytime you like. It's a great organization with a lot of good people. Also, Back Creek Gunshop is right next door to supply all your blackpowder needs
