I have been looking for a while to replace the Remington 700 BDL in .270 Win that I sold a while back to buy a Winchester 70 SS in 270 WSM which I still hunt whitetail with. Well I saw this Remington 721 on GB and couldn't pass on it. It has a near perfect stock, shiny bore, a Williams rear peep sight, and was manufactured in May 1948 which is the first year of production. This model was the predecessor to the model 700. These photos are GB photos of my new rifle. I am not sure if altering the sight negates its C&R status, but here in NJ, C&R doesn't mean squat anyway. I like it because of the simplicity of the stock and that it was built in a time when firearms were crafted, not just assembled. If it shoots as well as many reviews of the 721 state, I'll be very happy with it.

Thought I'd share a few pictures of this minty Rem 721 that must have been the original owner's safe queen. For now, all I've done is add a Williams FireSight front sight bead to make the Williams peep work better. I did modify the safety so that the bolt doesn't lock when the safety is on.

    very nice buy.

modifying the sight shouldnt be enough to negate its C&R status.

in general it needs to be major changes, such as stock swaps, cutting the barrel down etc.

Range report: 2.3moa with Williams FP-70 and front fire sight at 100yds. These light barrels are known for losing some accuracy when they warm up after a few shot, the last two are the ones that went high. Still, definitely dead deer at 100 yards... This rifle kicked harder than my 8mm Mauser!

I am thinking that if I shot at more appropriate targets that my groups would be better. The targets that I used are more for sighting a scope and doesn't give me much to center on with the peep and post. A properly sized black round target would have given me a better aim point, and that is what I will try next time out.

Very nice. I need to start focusing on non-milsurp C&R stuff. Lots of great stuff out there, like your 721.

I joined the Remington Society and posted my serial number. They put it on their master list and mine has the earliest production date for a Remington Model 721 in .270 that they have listed there.
