We did get to watch a Pileated Woodpecker for a while the other day... just never in the backyard.

We have a pair of them that visit regularly. They seem to favor the C&S Woodpecker Treat suet (blue label) from Walmart.

As screwy as weather patterns were this fall, I wouldn't rule it out. We've seen things this season that "shouldn't be here" as well.

Hard to get a size from the pic, but WETA could fit the bill, in the extreme. That said, the lack of white on the wing says it's more likely a transitional Scarlet Tanager.
