Every Winter Olympics I become fascinated with watching the Biathlon events. Did anyone watch the 4 Team Mixed Relay finish? Absolutely incredible. I love to see a Maryland wide Biathlon series. Cross county skiing or a summer runner Biathlon series. I’m willing to help if anyone else is interested.

The only reason for a grown man to run is if he doesn't have a bicycle. Summer biathlon should be mountain bike and pistol.

Ask MaxVO if he's interested...he's about the only one of us that's fit enough to do it :lol2:

If that’s what we have…really? I like the guy, but all the rest of you are fat bastards like me?

We did it one time at AAF&G. I think it was bike riding and shooting. I think it went well but forget the details. Do a search I believe JoeRinMD competed in it and also commented about it.

You've probably met more MDSF'ers (I really like the 'f'ers' at the end) than I have....you tell me? My experience is there's very few of us that are going to not seize up on the first leg of a biathlon :innocent0

Get it started in some of the junior programs and see if it spreads. They are fit enough to do it and always like a variety to keep things interesting. Draw up some rules, work out the details (they won't have flip targets and you probably won't want them to be carrying guns and ammo) and see if you can sell it to some of the junior programs.

That's how the AAF&G Bike-athlon got started. Another member is a bike rider and a shooter.
So, we thought about how to do it in our relatively populated area, and then created an event around those thoughts. As you mentioned, we decided that riding bicycles while carrying guns wouldn't go over well in the greater Annapolis area! :D The rifles were kept racked (with someone posted for security) while the riders were doing one of the loops.

Another thought was that we didn't want the competitors to do anything unsafe to shave a few seconds off their riding times since they'd be riding on public roads. So I came up with the idea of a "par time" for the riders. If they came in outside the par time window, they'd be penalized...whether faster or slower.

The biggest issue we had is that it took a long time to score the targets, and we had riders coming back while the range was cold and the targets were being scored. They had to wait until it was safe to make the range hot.

The answer to the scoring problem would be an Orion Scoring System, can scan and score a 12 bull target in 3 seconds.
